May 2016 Moms

I'm growing a giant!!!!!!!!

I was 20 weeks this past saturday so we went for our AS this past tuesday.
Well, little man isn't so little!
He is in the 75th percentile.. he is measuring in at and weighing what he should between 22-24 weeks
Other than him being a future NFL linebacker everything was excellent!!!!

Any other ladies got little giants inside their bellies???

Re: I'm growing a giant!!!!!!!!

  • My guy was also measuring in the 75th percentile at the AS. I was 21 weeks then and he was 1lb4oz. I am almost 24 weeks now and I know he has grown even more. I wouldn't worry about it. These are all just estimates and they are often off +/- 2 lbs

  • Loading the player...
  • My kids all measured big until they were born- sometimes up to 3 weeks.  I was always scared they would be huge!  They were both 8 lb+ at birth but are average (dd is actually way below average!) now.

    Thanks. Congrats to you too!
  • We joked that my son was Hulk Baby! He kept measuring at least 2-4 weeks ahead and was super strong. He could kick the remote clear off my belly by 24 weeks! Every tech remarked how giant his hands and feet were and, since we were Team Green, I hoped he would be a boy since a girl with giant feet and man-hands may have a tough time. As it turned out, he came over a month early, but was still 5lb 6oz and only in preemie clothes for a few weeks. He still at age 2 has huge hands and feet and is very lanky (he looks kind of like a Great Dane puppy!). He is in the 80th percentile for height, 25th for weight, and 95th for head circumference!

This one is a lot more petite, but is still already 1lb 5oz! Her limbs aren't as long as my son's were at this point and her hands and feet are a little daintier. While she is extremely active, she doesn't do the same hard jabs my son did. She is a little more flowy and fluttery with her movements and feels much higher than he ever was. Again, the techs all remarked on her head size, but I just have to concede that I grow big-headed kids.

Congrats on your healthy baby boy! And it wouldn't be the worst thing if he was an NFL linebacker. Those dudes make bank!

  • We have a follow up AS tomorrow since they couldn't get everything and I'm definitely going to ask about his approx weight right now. I did measure (belly measure) about 2 weeks ahead with my daughter the whole time, but they never really mentioned that she might be a large baby. We were completely shocked when she ended up being 10lbs 1oz at birth!

  • Remember though, even the u/s measurement is just an estimate! And especially when they mean your fundal height (belly)...those aren't terribly accurate.

  • At my AS, 18w4d, our baby was measuring 9 days ahead and 10 oz! He was only suppose to be weighing 6.7 oz during that stage.

Won't have another scan till February so we'll see how bigs he's growing :sunglasses:
  • Echoing PP, the estimates aren't super accurate. DS was estimated to be 9lbs at birth and was not quite 7.5lbs. My fundal height measured nearly two weeks ahead consistently. He was (and is) in the 95th/97th for height, but completely average (60%) for weight.
  • Ours was only 65% percentile, which surprised me because DH and I are both tall and I was a pretty big baby (the second biggest in the hospital at almost 9 pounds but that was 1977.)

DH said he wanted the baby in the 99% and the tech retorted "your wife does not want that." I laughed.

DH was not convinced though. I'd guess it is good sign you have a healthy baby!

  • Supposedly our baby is in the 90th percentile, and I've still yet to gain a pound. It's a very efficient baby factory over here!
  • @KaKip -- I actually laughed at that quote from the tech.

When my mom was pregnant with me, her #1 goal was to have "a big baby" (apparently she believed that a big baby would necessarily also be a healthy baby, therefore she figured that if she could make the baby big, then it would be healthy). She definitely succeeded in that goal... and ended up being in labor for 32 hours before needing a C-section and two-week hospital stay to recuperate. (After this, all my siblings came out as normal sizes, so either it was a first-baby/overdue baby issue or my mom actually did somehow manage to influence the baby's size with her lifestyle choices.)

Because of this story, my goal has always been to have a small baby. Healthy, of course. But, ideally, not as big as I was!
  • As you get closer, I definitely want to echo was past posters said about these being estimates, especially if you're making a decision about inductions and/or a c-section.

After a fight with my doctor about inducing bc I was overdue, they estimated my baby as over 8lbs and possibly causing issues by being too big because she was overdue. I pushed back about induction and gave birth when she was ready to a perfectly normal sized 7lb 14oz baby at one full week late. No where near the "giant" baby they had predicted. They wanted to induce on my due date for no other reason then she was going to get bigger and just because it's the thing to do?

Just food for thought in the future. :)

Congrats everyone on these healthy babies!

Ps my DDs head has always been in the 99th percentile. It was a major ouch at birth! I still can't believe her head is so big.
  • My last child was in the 68% and at 38 weeks weighed 10lbs 2 oz. her estimates/weight was wayyyyyy off

  • Just for the record, Average is anywhere between the 25th and the 75th percentile. So 75th is still average. And really, a lot of these babies don't maintain themselves after that, making moms worry about them not following their growth curve. Average is good (especially for your lady parts) ;)
  • Our little girl was measuring 80th percentile. DS was born at 39 weeks weighing 9lbs, 13 oz and 21.5 inches long. I am only 5 ft tall so that was one biiiig baby. I am hoping DD is a bit smaller.
  • My baby boy is in the 97th percentile. We were really surprised because people kept making comments about how small my belly looked. I'm pretty proud, actually... Just happy to have a growing baby and a healthy placenta! The doc said he will hopefully slow his growth down a bit before delivery though. Although someone's baby has the be in the 97th percentile. My partner is 6'4 and I'm 5'9 so I feel like chances are high we will have a big baby. No idea if it actually works like that though! Congrats on 75% though! That sounds kind of nice to me
  • I have no idea what size my baby is, since I had my A/S the day after my last check-up, so I have to wait a month to review the results with the doctor. I was 9lb9oz though, and right after the doctors took me away for four hours to examine me since they thought I might have diabetes or something because of my size. I've never heard of this happening to anyone else, but my mom is still pissed about it!

I also have this weird thing where I want my baby to be big, but when I think hard, I realize it would be way better to have an average-sized baby that's that much easier to deliver!
  • I'm also growing a giant!! My child doubled in size in the last 3 weeks, is measuring 2 weeks ahead, and is in the 90th percentile! Weighed in today at 1lb 9oz at 23 weeks.
  • I am right there with you ladies... At our 20 week appointment, our baby boy was measuring at 9.6 inches long and weighing a lb. now my husband isn't a small guy, he was a football player. So I never thought I was going to have a small baby. But I was seriously shocked that he was already that way.
  • All of my babies have been big so far (9lb 1oz, 12lb 12oz, & 7lb at 35 weeks), but they always measured on track or at least not abnormally large, certainly not this early anyway. It's just too soon to say at 20 weeks because they don't really have much to them yet.
I will say this about bigger babies though-I'm only 5'1 & I've had fairly easy straight forward labors, very short pushing times, & honestly, I think bigger babies are easier to dress & care for early on. Little teeny ones feel so much more delicate! Everyone is different though!
  • At my 20w check up, our little guy was weighing in the 66th percentile at 12 oz. Which isn't bad, as we'd expected since my DH weighed 11 lbs 6 oz at birth. He's 6'4 now and I'm barely 4'10. I'm just sitting here waiting for the other shoe to drop.
  • I'm with you! My little girl is in the 85th percentile for growth. You can feel her externally now cause she's always pushed against my skin. Doctor threw out the words c section if she keeps growing at this rate

  • epc5027 12 lbs?? 12??? I just crossed my legs for you!! :)
  • @ktous720 closer to 13 actually...he was my easiest labor though! And he was born at home... Pushing however was not so good because there was a shoulder dystocia. That was bad, very bad. But that was all its own thing entirely, never to be repeated!! And it's not worth recounting at this point- I'm not one to scare pregnant women!

I just had the anatomy screen for this new baby today & it's on the big side- 1lbish. But... We'll see. It's early still!

Exactly what I am thinking!!!!!! lol
