Stretches for breastfeeding

So I'm wondering if any other fellow breast feeding mamas have any stretches or exercises that help relieve neck, back, or shoulder discomfort from nursing? I'm absolutely dying over here!

Re: Stretches for breastfeeding

  • I don't have any ideas for exercises, but what rally helped me is to lean back, not forwards as I nurse. Also keeping shoulders back and relaxed. When I first started nursing, I also put a heating pad on my back which helped me to relax.
You might also want to post on the breastfeeding support thread at the top of this board, if you haven't already. Those ladies have wonderful advice.

  • I find when I have neck stiffness, I lean my ear toward my shoulder and use my hand to gently pull my head to one side to stretch my neck and shoulders. I hold for ten seconds or so. I do the same for the back of my neck by tucking my chin toward my chest.
  • Chiropracter has changed my life. Nursing neck is horrible!

  • Doorway pushups
  • I got a massage yesterday and the masseuse pointed out that hunching over is the culprit- and the problem is that our back muscles are pulled long and chest muscles end up super tight. So- even though my instinct is to stretch my back muscles it is actually counterproductive and the chest is what you should be stretching.
  • Thanks ladies! I was seeing the chiropractor during my pregnancy but it's a little too out of my way now that LO is here to go as often as I should.
  • I use two pillows when BFing in bed to avoid slouching. My midwife specifically said baby should always come to you, you should not make your body uncomfortable for baby!
  • I am going to go get a massage this weekend. I am hoping they can get rid of knots and relieve some aches and pains.
  • do you use a nursing pillow? I have been using "My Brest Friend" and it's a huge help - although it's hard for me to nurse without it so I'm tied to the pillow for now
  • I started doing some basic yoga poses to stretch out. what is so hard is I already suffer from shoulder and back pain from being large breasted. Nursing is killing my back and trying to find a comfortable feeding position as baby gets bigger is so tough because I can't hold him in the traditional across the lap position.
