  I've had two and they didn't hurt much- they hurt MUCH less than the contractions I was having for sure!! Plus within a few minutes, zero pain from contractions. I literally took a nap during labor both times after my epidural.

  Maybe just a couple of little pinches but compared to the contractions you have to sit through to get it it was absolutely nothing. They gave it to me as soon as they got me to my room and all hooked up. I wish I came to the hospital sooner so I could have gotten it sooner!

  With my son, I never even felt my epidural (other than the weird twinge in my leg, then it was gone).
  
  Absolutely glorious.
  
  And if you're in the middle of a contraction, most of the time you can ask the anesthetist (is that the right person?) to wait until it subsides. They want you to relax... and most of them don't want an angry, pregnant woman screaming at them.
