1st Trimester

Ovarian Pain

I'm almost 9 weeks pregnant, we just saw the baby and heard the heartbeat on new years eve so I know it isn't tubal. In having ovarian pain that comes and goes on my right side, I know for sure it's ovarian because I've struggled with cysts for as long as I can remember. Could it be a corpeous luteum, or does this go away by now? Any suggestions on how to remedy without tylenol/advil/aspirin?

It's probably RLP. Most of my 1st tri RLP with all 3 pregnancies started where my ovaries are.

  • Were any cysts present on your U/S?

I'm not 100% sure when my CL went away, but it was gone by the anatomy scan. I still had one at about 12 weeks, but I don't remember it causing my any pain. I also agree that it could be round ligament pain.

Sorry if I sound clueless :open_mouth: RLP happens this early? Yes, my first ultrasound was early(the pain was so bad I thought it was tubal), they told me I was 5 weeks because they couldn't see baby but two weeks later the baby measured at 8 weeks 1 day- so I'm 8 weeks 6 days today and they were more interested in making sure the baby was growing. There were several small cysts on each ovary at the first appt which isn't uncommon for me- but at the last appointment they didn't say anything so I'm not really sure. It mainly happens if I'm sitting with my legs propped up a bit, if I stand up after laying down for awhile, or if I need to use the restroom. Doctor said tylenol is ok to take *occasionally* if it's bad enough, but to not make it a habit. And I feel sick if I take warm baths so that's out :disappointed: . I remember having a cyst that made it painful to even sit down, unfortunately I have bad luck with the pesky things- always have.
  • RL pain can happen pretty early. I had some before I found out that I was pregnant with DS, but then again by the time i took the test I was about 8 weeks pregnant (I had irregular periods). I think I started having RL around five-ish weeks.

Keep in mind that even though your LO isn't terribly big, your body is still having to grow and adjust to accommodate your growing ute.

I'm of the opinion, though, that if you're this concerned, you should give your doctor a call just to get a professional medical opinion.

  • RLP can happen early in first tri, but I have heard ovarian cysts happening during pregnancy--typically second tri. From my understanding cysts under 6 cm in size remain uneventful. Cysts over 12 cm in size are a cause for concern and must be taken care of.

If you are truly concerned, I say book an appt with your OB specifically to discuss this. Or at least give them a call/email, maybe it can be discussed over the phone.
  • I think since it comes and goes I'll just wait it out but if it continues I'll call. I'm sure he peaked at everything and there was no cause for concern just freaking out over every ache and pain lately lol. Thank you ladies for the advice!
  • With my first pregnancy, I had RLP as early as 5 weeks and had no idea that's what it was, but I also didn't know I was pregnant. I was convinced I had a cyst or something worse. So I went to the dr where they were prepared to run a bunch of tests. Then as I was waiting for an ultrasound, they told me my pregnancy test came back positive. Then the dr explained to me that I was more than likely feeling RLP and to expect to feel it more throughout my pregnancy.
  • The corpus luteum lasts until about 10 weeks when the placenta can take over. I had mine rupture at the beginning and have had some pain on and off on that side since. Unless the pain is unbearable I wouldn't be to worried about it.

  • I had ovarian pain as well from about 5-7 weeks along. I am in my 8th week and it has subsided. It happened Mostly on my right side and when I sneezed or coughed or moved quickly. My pregnancy is not tubal but I did take fertility medication. I asked about it at my 6 week ultrasound and was told (and shown) that the follicles were still very large and that was likely the cause for me and it would continue a bit longer. They were scary shooting pains but now I am I to my 8th week and they have subsided.
