2nd Trimester

Bad pregnancy choices

This week has been a total mess. Signa got switched at work and i ended up eating a mouthful of hazelnuts which i am lightly allergic to, forcing me to take a benedryl. Then ive had a 4 day migraine i cant get rid of and it woke me out of a dead sleep at 3:30 am last night. I caved and took an ibuprofin which helped me get some relief but the migraine is back today. I feel bad that i reaprted to taking ibuprofen but i dont know what else to do. Im in a nee job that im trying to focus in and learn for but im suffering with the pain of migraines and still morning sickness. Im honestly at a loss b

first off, why did you eat so much of something you're allergic to?? also, stop taking Advil. take Tylenol & get to the doctor about your migraines so you can get some relief & stop taking medications that are potentially harming the baby.

This. Why are you eating something that you know you're allergic to? That makes no sense to me at all. Could your migraine be a side effect from an allergic reaction? And please stop taking Advil. That is something that my Dr was very explicit that I do not take because it can really hurt the baby.

ETA: I get bad migraines and Tylenol doesn't help at all. I have found that a little bit of caffeine and a warm shower have been helping me throughout my pregnancy. Maybe try that?

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. I didn't understand. I thought it was a typo for Cigna insurance so I was confused...
I did at first, too. It took me a minute to figure it out.

but like.. woudnt you notice it was actually a hazelnut after eating one or even two, instead of a whole mouthful? i guess unless OP stuck a bunch in all at once.

anyways, the typo also confused me, haha.

This. Hazelnuts don't look like any other nut (maybe macadamia nuts if the hazelnuts are completely cleaned?)

Regardless, OP, call your doctor. Unfortunately we internet ladies can't help you diagnose yourself. Good luck, and stop the ibuprofen. ;)
That was my thought unless the item was some sort of filled doughnut so they couldn't see that there were hazelnuts? DH is deathly allergic to all tree nuts so maybe I view this with an eye of skepticism because he is crazy strict about food. Ditto again to nixing the ibuprofin, Tylenol all the way.

I'm thinking the nuts were INSIDE something and she didn't know? I'm super allergic to nuts to so I'm crazy careful with food.

I had to look them up to see what they looked like. I'm just taking her at her word that it was an accident.

  • You guys...she said she took the ibuprofen once. She's not taking dose after dose after dose. Yes, she should have called her doctor. Hopefully she does now.

I honestly don't know if her typo means resorted to or repeated to. In either case, she's had this seemingly unbearable migraine for four days. Still plenty of time to have used some common sense and called her doc.
If you replace the misspelled word with both of those words, the only one that makes sense is resorted. I can tell she's using an iPhone and she probably has the autocorrect turned off. I agree she should have called her doctor, but we don't know her migraine history. Maybe she's had them before where they went away after day 3. I'm just saying she's being hit a bit harshly for doing something probably every one of us has done.

i haven't eaten things I'm allergic to or taken Advil while pregnant.
I'm sorry but just.. no. Advil can be very dangerous. after getting into an accident back when i was only 16 weeks along, my doctor was very adamant that i do not take Advil, no matter what. i cant remember the exact reason, but i remember it being a scary one. i don't think anyone is really bashing her.. just kinda calling her out for not using common sense. she knew she wasn't supposed to take Advil, but did anyways instead of contacting her doctor for other, safer methods of dealing with her 4 day migraine.

I never said anyone bashed her. I said people are being a bit harsh. She accidentally ate something she's mildly allergic to. Search any of the boards and you'll find myriad threads about "I accidentally ate raw eggs" or "I ate a steak that wasn't well done" as well as women admitting to eating things on the "no no list." So this is just kind of par for the course. Like I said earlier, I had to look up what a hazelnut looks like because they're not that common where I'm at.

Yes the ibuprofen was a bad decision, she admits that. She took it one time. And it's really only unsafe during the 3rd trimester and probably the 1st trimester. Taken in the 3rd trimester it can cause heart and lung issues and low amniotic fluid levels. Yes, she should have called her doctor. I've said that more than once I believe. For all we know, because she didn't say, she might have called the doctor. You and I both know that's often a fruitless endeavor.

I'm just saying I can understand her level of desperation.

  • Ladies, i apologize for the incorrect spelling of the word "signs".  I was using my iPhone to post so my fat fingers unfortunately got in the way.  The situation was signs got switched between two chocolate cheesecakes at work.  One plain and one with hazelnuts baked in.  I took a bite and started chewing and the nuts were soft so it didn't really feel like there was something else in the cheesecake.  Until the flavor kicked in and i panicked.  I tried calling the doctors office, but they were out to lunch, and the secretary said she would have someone get back to me....so I resorted to checking google and various websites to see if there was an immediate danger to taking a dose of benadryl to help prevent a bad reaction.  When the doctor called me back he said benadryl was fine but if after it wore off, if i had any allergic reactions from the nuts still being in my system, go to the ER instead of taking another dose.

With the migraine, I did call the doctors office--they said taking tylenol with a cup of coffee was okay, which I did try each of the 4 days of the migraine.  I did call on the 4th day and they suggested using cold compresses and more tylenol and maybe an extra cup of coffee.  For those of you who have migraines, you know how bad that pain can be.  To wake up early in the morning in blinding pain, can't move your jaw, open your eyes or hear noise is awful.  I tried to sleep it off, and taking a hot shower actually did give me some temporary relief but it came fighting back.  I took 1 pill of the ibuprofin after my DH convinced me that 1 pill will likely not harm the baby b/c i'm not taking it regularly.  Then compared pregnancy now to when women in the 60's - 80's were pregnant and still drinking & smoking (neither of these things I am doing even though the doctor said a small glass of wine now and again coudln't hurt).  I feel guilty about taking the ibuprofin and even now I still have the headache.  I have an appointment monday with my doctor who is going to check my BP and make sure this isn't preeclampsia or something life threatening.

It's not something I've been taking regularly...and the point of my post was to find out if anyone else has made the bad choice once or twice to get some kind of relief from the joys of migraines or other ailment.  I apologize if I offended anyone.

  • My OB recommended that I take ibuprofen for muscular pain I was having. She said it's safe during the 1st & 2nd trimester. I wouldn't stress it & I certainly wouldn't say that you made a selfish careless decision that you should feel guilty about. I would suggest though that maybe you do some research first if possible before taking something in the future.
  • And just for the naysayers. ... I gum mouth surgery when I was pregnant with the twins... at 23 weeks... and had to take motrin 800mg three times a day for 7 days... was cleared and ok'd by oral surgeon, my ob and a high risk doc. So yes... there are times motrin/ibuprofen/alevel are allowed during pregnancy and my boys are fine

Sorry you have had a rough few days OP
  • seriously give the girl some support! That's why she turns to us to get some support, not to be bashed. I recommend speaking to your doc to get some relief. And in the meantime, we are all human and make bad decisions. I do recommend taking Tylenol though so that you don't feel so guilty and can get some relief because I do hear its better for you to take while pregnant. Good luck! Hope it works out
  • I also struggle with terrible headaches so I feel your pain and have found accetomenaphine to not help. I've found downing extra water, switching off on hot and cold compress at the base of my neck to help as well as caffeine. For me a soda helps if I can get it in early before its full blown. We all make mistakes and the cheesecake mishap is totally understandable and not your fault and yes go by your dr's recommendations but try not to just trust your husband. Continue to call your dr if the headaches continue unfortunately I've noticed they seem to be a pregnancy side effect for women and are caused by hormones I've read.

I really do hope you feel better soon because I know how debilitating that pain can be.
