Pregnant after 35

ultrasound tomorrow (positive thoughts/energy welcome)

I finally have my first u/s scheduled for tomorrow morning when I should be 6w4d based on my ovulation date and PGAL brain is starting to kick in. I was a total space cadet at work all day, unable to focus b/c I'm anxious about tomorrow. My DP is out of town and so I'm going it solo. I am just hoping with everything I have that the little bean measures on target and has a strong heartbeat. If it's bad news, it will be particularly awful b/c I'll be alone with it and have to host a dinner party for a bunch of friends tomorrow night that don't know I'm pregnant.  Anyway, please keep your fingers crossed for me!

  • Dr. says things look to be progressiMy normally, but agreed the heart rate is on the low end of normal. Rescheduled an ultrasound for 1/20 to follow up.
  • That's fantastic @redheadbride15! Congrats and good thing you could get him to move.
  • Glad things went well, @mamafesto and @redheadbride15 ! I hope that little heart rate picks right on up in the next week, @Mamafesto !

And, @redheadbride15 --that's a lot of acrobatics! Glad they finally got what they needed and we're kind enough to explain things. My ultrasound tech last time was super awesome and walked me through everything. It was so nice.
  • So happy to hear the good news @Mamafesto and @redheadbride15!!! I'm sure there's a lot of variation with early heart rates and I'm hoping it picks up in a few weeks @Mamafesto.

I'm sooooo nervous about my ultrasound tomorrow! I was feeling so sick and nauseated for so long and as much as it sucked, it provided constant reassurance that I was in fact pregnant. Well, the nausea stopped yesterday and I started getting some painful cramps. Yikes!!!!  :# I can't help but go into panic mode but am trying to remain calm. I'm 9 weeks today so maybe it just means my hormones have peaked? Who knows. I'm just counting down the hours until I go in tomorrow...Praying we get good news!

  • Hope all goes well tomorrow, @jilligan14 ! It is so hard to wait and to not read a ton into every change in symptoms. I hope the time passes quickly until your ultrasound. Let us know how it goes!
  • Thanks everyone! I'm doing ok, I just wish the heart rate was less borderline. Seems incongruous that the bean would measure several days ahead but have a slow heartbeat. I tried to research accuracy of heart rate measurements via abdominal u/s this early in pregnancy, but couldn't find anything (obsessive much?). Anyway, I'm trying to be reassured by the fact that this embryo has already developed further than my last pregnancy (which stopped growing at 6w3d). I'm hopeful for my next u/ s, I just wish things weren't so out of my control in this process.

@redheadbride15, congrats on your awesome scan!

@jilligan14, I'll be thinking of you today and keeping everything g crossed that all is well with your little bean!

great ultrasound @redheadbride15, cracking up at you doing exercise to get that baby to cooperate!!

Good luck today @jilligan14, let us know how it goes:)

  • Sooooo hard not to obsess, @mamafesto. Sometimes I wish I knew less than I do. But it's good to be informed too, I guess. Praying for a great ultrasound next week for you!
  • Thanks all for the support! It really means a lot.

My first OB visit went well today and we got to see our little bean wiggling away in there with tiny little arm buds (so precious)! But boy did I get a scare in the beginning. It's a small office and the OB just wanted to use a Doppler to hear the heartbeat. I was surprised since I thought I would be getting an ultrasound. She couldn't hear anything with the Doppler and then told me not to panic while she went to find the ultrasound machine. Yikes! But luckily we were able to see the little nugget on the ultrasound and it's fast flickering heartbeat. She didn't do anything official to measure the heartbeat but said it looked like it was around 160. Does this seem normal (to just eyeball a heartbeat)? The RE's office was just more professional and advanced in comparison. I go to the hospital on the 25th for a more detailed ultrasound and genetic work. She wants me to get a Cell-Free DNA test and I've never heard of that one before.

Anyway, all in all it was good and reassuring and I'm thankful to still be pregnant. And the nausea is back in all its glory!

  • @jilligan14 --I'm so glad you got to see your little bean, arm and leg buds and all! But oh my gosh, I would have nearly had a heart attack too! Not nice of the doc to start with the Doppler so early! It's notoriously hard to find that little heartbeat with the Doppler at the early stages. I'm glad you got to move quickly to the ultrasound and be assured all is well. I don't know about the "guesstimating" of the HR, but hopefully someone else will have some insight on that for you. Fun that you get to see baby again in just a couple of weeks!
  • @jilligan14 yeah the Doppler is really bad at picking up HB before about 10 weeks. The nurse who took my first (at about 9.5 weeks) told me before she started not to expect anything because it was so early. I think that was the perfect way to handle the situation. She even said the same to me at my second visit at 13 weeks. (She did find it both times though).

Also, I should do a post about cell free DNA testing... But the basics: it's a non-invasive test (blood sample from mom) for the most common chromosome disorders. It takes advantage of the fact that some of baby's DNA makes its way into mom's bloodstream (crazy, I know!). The test can detect that fetal DNA. It is very, very accurate for the trisomies - 21 (Down syndrome), 13 & 18 (which are rarer but much more severe). Some of the tests can also detect other types of chromosome disorders and fetal sex. They should explain exactly what the test will report when you go in to talk with them.

  • @jilligan14just want to chime in about the cell-free dna test. Anytime someone mentions MaterniT21, Harmony or Panorama (and maybe others?) that's what they are talking about. Those are brand names of cell-free dna tests.

  • @redheadbride15 - thanks for explaining the basics of the test to me! It's so amazing that the baby's DNA makes its way into my blood stream! How crazy is that!!!

@CarrieandRoy - I've definitely heard the other names thrown around and didn't realize they were all the same thing. Whew, that's a relief. I was worried I was getting some strange test I'd never heard of before! Where would I be without you gals?!?!?!
