3rd Trimester

Biiiiig baby!!!!!

So let me preface this by saying that I know every pregnancy is different, and that measurements can sometimes be off. However, I'm 32w+5d, and today my LO was weighed at 5.8 pounds. That's TWO POUNDS more than average at his gestational age!!!! He is larger than 91% of other babies, and has a "big head" (to use the tech's exact words). At this rate, I'm going to be giving birth to a toddler. Should I freak out now, or later?!?!

Re: Biiiiig baby!!!!!

  • MY first was born at 35w4d and was 7#9 and 21 inches long... not only will u be fine but... the ultrasounds can be way off. Don't panic

  • Haha. I feel ya! Just keep in mind that ultrasounds can be off a pound or 2 in either direction. My baby has been measuring in the 98% since our anatomy scan and the whole time the doc has reassured me that it is still very much a guessing game. You might have a larger baby, or it all might turn out to be fairly average. I have had 2 additional growth scans just to keep an eye (at 36 wks he was estimated just over 8 pounds), but I think you can safely save any freaking out. Your doc will keep an eye, and women have so many different birth experiences, you might just be good at big babies!
  • Don't freak out. I have friends that are tiny and had 9-10 pound babies with very little effort! Other friends who you would expect to pop them right out had a hard time with 6 pound babies. It depends a lot of your anatomy inside, not how big you look or your hips look or anything like that. I have the biggest hips of most of my friends and two of my tiniest friends pushed out their babies in under 20 minutes. I took 4 hours pushing and ended in a c-section because apparently I have a very low pelvic bone, who knew? You would never have guessed this by looking at any of us or our ultrasounds.
  • I understand why it's scary, but you will be OK. My son was born at 8# 4 oz, one month early...so I feel you. It's going to be fine, though.

  • At my 28 week scan, 2 weeks ago, LO measured 3.2lbs and was in the 87th percentile. I have had two previous babies that were considered "large" (a 36 week girl weighing 7.14 and a 38 week girl weighing 8.9) My OB is watching the growth and we are just expecting another "on the larger side" girl. He will re-check her growth at 36 weeks is the plan and if I haven't had her probably induce around 38 or 39 weeks (my 36 weeker was NOT induced). Every Dr is different, some see no need for induction due to size of baby, others see it as preventing an unnecessary csection outcome for "Mom to Be" if baby is induced before it reaches 10-12lbs. Your doctor knows what your body type/build can endure. Also, ultrasound can be off 9oz bigger or smaller, but in my experience it was very close spot on!!! Good luck to you and your chunky baby!!
  • I had a 30 week scan today and baby measured 33weeks 4.5 pounds! I feel you on the fear.
  • Also I apologize if this is inappropriate but for those of you who had your babies a little earlier, did they come on their own because of size, or was there another factor at hand?
  • Also, U/S have a pretty large margin of error. So there's that.

My DS was born at 33 weeks and weighted 6lbs, 3 oz. So he was huge by preemie standards.

I had had the easiest pregnancy (no MS, no swelling, no Gestational Diabetes, no pre- e, etc.) I woke up at 5am one morning thinking I had to pee. then 5 minutes later I had to pee again, and again. This is TMI but I didn't actually have to let myself pee, it was leaking out. So I called my doc, rushed to the hospital and was already 5 cm dilated.

I am hoping for a full term baby this time. The NICU is the worst, even with a big baby.

  • My 1st was induced at 38 weeks due to pre-e, she was 8.9. My second came on her own, after several attempts to stop labor from 33 weeks till she was born finally at 36 weeks, she weighed 7.14. Both of my babies were perfectly healthy, except a little trouble after being discharged with jaundice which is more common than not. This baby, if she doesn't come on her own before 38 weeks will prob also be induced as she is in the 87th percentile and we know my history of big babies:)The chance of me not being able to deliver naturally due to size at full term is more of a worry to me than a 2 week early induction. The Dr will make the decision that best suits you! Some will NOT induce because of size regardless of how big baby appears... Some will. Hope that helps
  •  Both of my kids were 9 pounds at birth and have gigantic heads. My vag survived and even went back to normal! You'll be fine  B)
Yup - 9pounder over here with a giant 100% head and yet here I am having another one who's following in his brother's footsteps.
    DS1 - 9/21/11
    DS2 - 7/4/14
    DS3 - 2/21/16

Yup, ultrasounds are notoriously often wrong. I was told 90th percentile throughout my pregnancy and to expect a 10lb plus baby. She was actually born after my due date weighing 7lb 2oz and was in the 25th percentile. The ultrasounds were waaaaay off.

I don't know why, @SarahFoley725, but I assume this is why. He was 3w6d early, and was 8 poinds, 4 ounces. So...probably size. He was jaundiced though, and had low blood sugar, which sucked. But he was the biggest preterm baby most of my nurses had ever seen! (No GD, by the way, I just make Vikings.)

My baby weighed 4.6 lbs at my 31w5d US today but the tech said he's in the 60th percentile for weight. Based on what you are all saying it sounds like he is actually a higher percentile for his gestational age than she claimed.
He also has 90th percentile appendages and very large feet :)
  • These measurements are notoriously inaccurate. After my ultrasound with DS1 they said he was going to be 10+ lbs with a huge head and shoulders. He was 8lb4oz and head was 75th percentile. I still had a fairly easy vaginal birth and was pissed that they acted to sure that he was going to be huge because all it did was worry me. Also, many women have no problem at all birthing very large babies.
