NTTCR - GYTKY - New Year, New You?

Hi Ladies!
I thought I'd get a little conversation going to get us motivated.
What are you doing in the New Year to better yourself - physically, mentally, spiritually?  What goals have you set for yourself?
And.....GO!

  • Thanks for starting this, @happyktmom!  I haven't really come up with concrete goals, but like @rspalding001, I need to really learn how to let things go.  I can get so wound up over the silliest of things.  I need to stop allowing myself to get sucked into such negativity.

I've bought myself coloring books and colored pencils, so I've found a constructive way to help refocus myself when at home.  Health-wise, I'm trying to cook more food using the crockpot and stove.  I know that may sound silly to some of you, but my DH and I were notorious microwave fans.  Tonight we had a mini-Thanksgiving meal and it was so delicious.
  • More reading is on my list too- goal is at least 12 books this year. Also to just plain have more fun!!
  • This may be a far out of the ordinary goal, but I realized in the last several years thanks to Ulta points tracking how much you spend basically, that I have spent so much money on beauty products, mostly in the quest to achieve perfect hair (my hair is naturally curly and I have always been on this quest for magic products that are going to make my curls better than ever because I hate being stuck with curly hair but far too lazy to straighten it).  So, with that being said, my goal is to finally let go of this quest and just stick with the products that work decently enough for me, and stop trying every new product I see that is usually way too expensive for what it's worth.  And also just to stop buying lots of more expensive beauty stuff because I know I won't be able to do this if we have a child in the picture.  I stop at a counter at Macy's and suddenly I'm just sucked in thinking it's going to change my world, but it's no better than what I buy at Rite Aid.

Another goal is to keep moving so that my back pain stays away.  I've undergone lots of different treatments and spent a lot of money on healthcare thanks to my lower back and one thing I can honestly say I haven't done was exercise regularly.  We got a puppy recently and I take her on walks every day and I notice I am not in pain when I wake up in the mornings and my pain since my last treatment has stayed away, I believe in part due to the walking.  I need to keep up with this.

@Piperella - I also bought a coloring book and pencils and enjoy coloring.  It's a great mental escape/distraction.  I have also become the queen of crockpot cooking and I'm hooked...it's just way too convenient and so much better than cooking a whole meal when I get home from work in the evening.

  • I love the coloring ideas!  I know a lot of people that have started doing that to destress!

My goal is to wake up an hour early every morning and have 'me' time.  Ideally, this time will be used to excercise.
I have already begun eating cleaner and healthier.  @emsmama15 , thank you for recommending the 10 day green smoothie cleanse.  The first day was rough and I decided to modify but I want to do the full cleanse asap.  My body holds onto sugar and carbs for dear life!  I need a detox.
Another one of my goals is to be a better listener.
Spiritually, I want to become more active in a church.  I am really digging the community churches nearby that have loud, fun music and get everybody involved and listening without being too preachy.

    Thanks ladies for playing!

  • I don't usually do New Years resolutions, but once we started TTC I wanted to get back to eating whole foods and working out more regularly. I trained for a half marathon a few years ago and spent 6 months eating only whole foods (no meat, no dairy, no foods with added sugar - including honey and agave). I know I can do it, it just takes so much time to plan and prepare, but I'd like to get back to that as much as possible. I've also been plagued by illness since starting in the ER a year ago which has crushed my work out schedule. I'm finally over a 4 day stomach virus and determined to get back to running or swimming 4 days per week (even if it's just a quick 20 min run!).

Love the ideas for reading more and coloring! I spend way too much time on my phone and would like to get back to knitting and reading again.

I also decided that I would get back on track with writing a series of children's books about anatomy and physiology (I did graphic design before becoming a nurse). I plan to submit a proposal to a medical publisher this week.....which feels way out of my league, but I've had so many people urging me to do it that I have to at least try!
