Regular OBGYN or MFM Doc?

My OBGYN, who has been my doctor for 20 years and delivered both of my children, informed me when I got my BFP that starting this month, she will no longer be doing obstetrics (only gynecology). Anyway, now I need to find a new doctor. I was referred by a friend to a MFM doctor that she loves, but is age enough of a reason to see a specialist? Are you seeing a regular OBGYN or a specialist of some sort?

    I just see a regular OB, and did with my first pregnancy as well, during which I was 38 and turned 39. I love her. So, I think the most important thing is to be with someone you like and trust. If insurance doesn't care, and you like the doc your friend recommended, I'd go with that. But I wouldn't think you would need to see a specialist unless there were other indicators.

    Thanks, I wouldn't think so, either...I'm just bummed that I have to find someone new. My doctor was part of a practice group and during my last pregnancy, I had to see a couple of the other doctors a few times for routine checkups. Let's just say that I did not love them, so I think I might be hard to please :#

    AMA alone isn't usually an indication to be seen by an MFM, who generally specialize in high-risk pregnancies where moms have health conditions and/or if the fetus is diagnosed with a problem. MFMs get most of their referrals from general OBs if they determine a patient needs a higher level of care. I'm sorry you have to find a new OB though! Such a bummer. I've been going through the same with trying to find a new PCP - I've been looking for years with no luck.

    I had midwives with my first pregnancy but after a preterm birth, I was told I needed to find an OB.  I do see MFM for consults but my primary dr is an OB and I love her.  I find the approach is VERY different in that the MFM dr always seems to be focused on what could go wrong, no matter how unlikely and my OB is way more concerned with what's going right and being positive about how good things look.  My personality is such that every time I see MFM I spend the next week panicking and anxious.  I think the most important thing is to find a dr you "click" with and feel good about seeing and that you trust unless there is a medical reason you can only consider the care of a MFM specialist.

    I'm still with the same practice that delivered my son 5 years ago. Nothing was mentioned about a specialist because of age.
