Formula advice for a sensitive tummy

Here's how our long 9 weeks have gone with little Marcus...
Started out on Similac Advance in the hospital. He immediately showed signs he couldn't tolerate it. Very gassy and a lot of spit up.
Signs of painful reflux, so put on Zantac.
Switched to Similac Sensitive and did good for about a week. Started getting really gassy and had loose diapers. And not gaining weight.
Sister started pumping for him...projectile spit up with every feed!
Switched to Gerber Soothe, super gassy and very fussy, spit up got a little worse.
Zantac stopped working after a couple of weeks, so switched to Prevacid. (Wasn't told anything about it, that I needed to continue the Zantac until Prevacid started working, which made us go through about 4 days of screaming hell).
Switched to Similac Alimentum. Has been in that for over a month. Spit up has gotten way worse, very stinky gas, diapers are half dark green clay like/half loose...very strange. And spit up is pretty mucousy. But he's finally gaining a little weight.
Prevacid isn't working well so we just switched to Axid today.
Dr suggested we switch to Enfamil AR! Doesn't make sense to me to put him back on a milk based formula...I know he needs another change, but i don't agree with her suggestion. We tried thickening the Alimentum but it was still coming up quite a bit, but getting stuck in his throat due to his super mucousy spit up.
Sorry for the book! It's been a long two months!

Re: Formula advice for a sensitive tummy

  • Hi! I'm hoping I can help here. Same problem....to the point of colic caused by GERD. She choked until she was purple on breast milk in the hospital and when we got home - flipping her over and sucking with a bulb till she breathed again was so F***ing scary the first few weeks. We finally found a solution that we and our pediatrician are good with, but 7 weeks of hell was what it was! You were on the right track with thickening, but how much to thicken was the question for us-the answer is-until it works! First off, we used avent bottles with a size 0 nipple. That was the slowest flow we could find, but couldn't thicken the bottle enough for miss Charlotte. Still projectile, formula coming out the nose, tummy ache, screaming for hours-I mean hours, no back time-made it worse, etc. So, here's our solution-I know every baby is different, every pediatrician is different. We used avent bottles-size1 nipple(to get the thick formula through), enfamil gentle ease (purple kind), and tablespoons of rice cereal equivalent to the ounces she eats. Right now, we feed her 4 ounces of formula with 4 tablespoons of rice cereal every 3-4 hours. We started with 3 ounces and 3 tablespoons. She is just over 8 weeks, and is happy, finally happy! She can even lay on her back for a bit! She had slept in a RNP for 5 weeks after stomach sleeping for 2 weeks(hubby and I took around the clock shifts to stare at her because we were so scared of her belly sleeping), but we were still so nervous as she wasn't flat on her back. Now, week 8, she sleeps in her crib, with a crib wedge, for 4-5 hour stretches at night-the safest sleeping for her yet! We are even sleeping now :-)! Anyway, that's my story, and I hope it helps a little or gives you another idea/option to think about!

Those didn't work for Charlotte :-(. We tried for a week. But my nephew, who was born in Sept., loves those bottles with the premie nipple-that's why we tried them! Another good idea!!
  • We tried the Dr Brown bottles. Baby hated the small nipple. He'll take the wide mouth Dr Brown bottle, but they don't have a premie nipple. We've settled on the Tommee Tippee with a super slow flow nipple at the moment.
  • Have you tried a soy based formula? Sorry if you have I'm not familiar with the types of formula. I know that my younger twin siblings had awful problems with formula and had to be on a strict soy based one due to sensitive stomachs. Random creepy internet hugs. I hope you find a solution that works for you!
  • We haven't tried soy yet. I've read some pretty bad things about soy formulas, but not sure how accurate they are.
  • Sometimes it's just a build the plane as you fly it type deal. I would follow the lead of your pedi. They should be able to provide you samples to try before you buy a big container.
  • After more than 5 different formulas, regular and sensitive, and major spit up with gas tummy issues, we switched to soy for my oldest at 2 months. He thirived and got so much better. He was very healthy and finally had my happy baby :) he is now 17 months.
  • We tried all the formulas you mentioned except alimentum and also tried enfamil gentlease, regular and AR and had the best success with gentlease. Dr suggested switching to nestle good start with probiotic but we haven't tried that yet. We just discovered probiotic drops for colic and it's made a big difference in only a couple days
