Thrush?

Has anyone had thrush from breast feeding? How did you know you had it? Can you get it from exclusively pumping? Do I have to call the dr in order to treat it or can I consult the lactation specialist?

(I know it's a lot of questions but I don't want to call the dr if I don't have to)

Re: Thrush?

  • DD and I are finishing up treatment for thrush. I had terrible nipple pain that I assumed was normal, but I called the doctor when the pain was showing up deeper in my breasts. Thankfully, this all happened before the baby developed any symptoms.

I use a generic Monistat cream on my nipples, and that can be purchased anywhere. However, you should call the pediatrician. They can give you more info and prescribe something for the baby. Even if your LO isn't showing symptoms, he or she should be treated because it can pass back and forth. If you pump and store and it is thrush, you'll need to get rid of any frozen milk that was pumped while you had symptoms because freezing the milk doesn't get rid of the bacteria.

If you Google symptoms, you'll find a ton of information. Good luck! Thrush is really painful, so I hope you can nip it in the bud.

When I had it the pain was unbearable, it was a sharp shooting pian. My nipples were also bright red. LO got very fussy with feedings and her mouth had white patches. If it's just milk it will easily wipe away. I did consult my doctor for advice. If you have it you need to boil pump parts after every use, wash clothing that is in contact with your nipples on hot water with vinager. Also try and keep your nipples dry, air dry before putting bra back on, change breast pads often.

  • Did any of your LO's get really fussy from thrush?  After (thankfully and suprisingly) easy and mostly painless breastfeeding for the first month I suddenly had itchy burning nipples.  DS also has a white patch on his tongue that I can't easily wipe away, although that had been there for a few weeks prior.  I called the pediatrician and  they gave me meds for DS over the phone and my OB similarly prescribed meds for me as well.

It's been two days with no change, but if anything, DS is even more fussy at night--and now even the daytime is difficult.  He sometimes fusses and pulls away from the breast, and has always been a big spitter-upper.  I don't have too much trouble nursing him to sleep and moving him to his bassinet.  After about 15 min though, he starts kicking and flailing his limbs in his sleep, arching his back, and even crying in his sleep for about a minute or two, going limp and back to sleep (especially if he manages to pass gas) for maybe 5 min and flailing again until he eventually wakes himself up screaming (about half of the time after spitting up).  I usually then pick him up, check his diaper, and then nurse him back to sleep.  The past few days I've only slept during the one 3 hour nap I can get him to stay asleep for--I think just because he's so tired at that point.  I'm terrified of falling asleep with him while nursing, especially since DH works nights so it's just me.  Any advice?  The pediatrician said to come in 5 days after starting the meds if the thrush isn't gone but I'm not sure if I just need to tough it out until then or if this is the type of thing I should call them again for?  Has anyone else gone through something like this?
  • We had to get our son (and me) treated for thrush when he was a week old. When he was going through it he was really fussy, especially when it came time to eat. He'd eat for a minute or so and then rip himself off of me and scream.

It's difficult to get through (read: I cried at every feeding), but once the medicine kicks in and his mouth starts feeling better he'll fuss less and eat better.

After reading this thread and doing some "Google research" I think I have thrush? Or it's on my nipples. I thought my LO had it bc his tongue was white but he doesn't seem bothered by it. And my left nipple has a sharp shooting pain in it a lot. Never had it before so I never knew what to look out for. I'm going to call my OB and his pediatrician on Monday for an appt.
  • @thatgirlree24 Better safe than sorry. My only symptom was the sharp pain, too. I actually didn't have to go in; both my doctor and the pediatrician just talked to me on the phone. I'm sure it depends on the individual.
