What can I do about the flu?

I woke up at 6am (regular time) feeling crummy, I took a shower and now I feel like I NEED to get sick before I'll feel any better but I'm scared to even sit up because I despise puking! Could this be the flu coming on?? What can I take for the flu at 38.5 weeks pregnant? I feel so miserable right now!

Re: What can I do about the flu?

  • Before you start taking anything I would try to see what's going on first. It may be just some 3rd tri sickness or you may have picked up a bug. If it's viral you can really only manage the symptoms anyway. Are you running a fever? I'd call your doc and ask what they think first.

  • You can't take anything for the flu anyway, it's a virus. If you mean stomach flu the only thing that will stop vomiting is vomiting or zofran. Then it tends to come out the other way. Either way you're in for a bout of misery. If you start vomiting and cannot keep down water you will most likely want to go to L&D to prevent dehydration.
  • I don't remember ever having the flu as an adult so I really cannot relate to any past experiences... Why can't we just sleep until these babies come out?! :'(
  • Fluids and rest if it's truly the flu. If you're getting dehydrated due to diarrhea or vomiting I would call the dr. Hopefully it's just some 3rd tri sickness that passes though.

This.  The flu and the stomach flu (gastroenteritis) are two different things.  I think it would be best to make a trip to your doc's office.

No offense, but if you have the flu, you may not want to go to your appointment today and risk getting others sick.

  • Also, if you had the real "flu" you would probably be seriously beyond exhausted and in physical pain by now, not ready to drive to the doc. You still haven't clarified if you meant that or stomach flu, in which case if you haven't actually vomited and are feeling like death is unlikely.
  • What PPs said.  Achiness, fever, headache, etc. are all classic flu symptoms.

  • I guess I don't know, I'm waiting for the Dr to call back. I've vomited twice but that's all and just feel overall crummy. Maybe this is just the 3rd tri sickness that PP mentioned? Just waiting for the doc to call back

It's possible, or you just caught a stomach bug (which can seriously come from anywhere).  If you are just vomiting, it doesn't sound like the actual flu.

  • What PPs said. You'd know if you have the flu. You'd feel like death. Sounds like 3rd tri sickness or a bug.

  • I'm also interested to know if I should go see the Dr or not. I'm 38 weeks and I woke up yesterday with fuzzy throat feeling. It did not go away today and I've been really tired all day, even napped twice, can't tell if I'm just cold or if i have chills, have this kind of stuffy head feeling that's almost a headache, and I vomited when I tried to eat, but I don't feel extremely nauseous. I dont have a thermometer, so I can't say about the fever. Does this sound like just a cold that I should tough out, or should I call the Dr tomorrow?
  • @Knottie84607381 I would call in and describe your symptoms. The way my office works is you leave a message with symptoms then one of their nurses calls back and does some follow up. OB will contact later if further action is needed.
How close are you to your next scheduled appointment? I called in yesterday and have an appointment today so they weren't too concerned about not seeing me yesterday.

  • Unfortunately they didn't have any available times until next Monday, so I won't actually be seen during week 38. I held off on calling since the vomiting subsided and am pretty much trying to rest up as much as possible.
