Back pain

I woke up with extreme lower back pain today, to the point where it has been hard to walk at times. I have arthritis in my back but haven't had any major pain in quite some time. I am wondering if this could be pregnancy related at this point (I am 9 weeks today). I know that back pain is frequent in pregnancy, but I wasn't expecting it so soon. I took Tylenol which took the edge off but it's still very painful. Anyone have an experience with something similar? And if so, any advice? Thanks!!

I experienced early back pain the first time I was pregnant. I think they told me if it wasn't accompanied by cramping it was normal. However if it it is so intense you having trouble walking I might call the doctor. When is your next appointment?

  • Lower back pain is totally normal. It's actually the first symptom I experienced with all three of my pregnancies. I've had pretty bad back pain, but not to the point of being unable to walk. I would agree with PP - you might want to call your doctor.

  • My next appointment isn't until the end of January. I was planning to call tomorrow if the pain is still there. I had some brief cramping this morning, just for a few minutes, but no spotting. I've had random bouts of cramping every few days that seem to be normal, but the back pain just started today.
  • I have the same pain and asked my doctor about it this morning - she said with the growing uterus still nestled in your pelvis, it can press on your tailbone/lower spine and cause discomfort. She said once it "pops" up at about 12 weeks, I should feel some relief. Not sure if it's the same situation for you, but I thought it was interesting!
  • Do you see a chiropractor?  I still have lower back/hip pain from my first, and when mine started flaring last week, I went in.  No more pain!  Maybe a slight adjustment can help?

  • I'm having lower back and hip pain as well, but mine is accompanied by cramping and upper right leg pain. I'm going to get it checked out tomorrow at my first appointment, which was moved up two weeks because of this pain I'm feeling. I don't know if it's normal or not, but I found a way to relieve it. DH has been massaging my lower back and it's helped relieve the back aches, hip aches and my cramping. It doesn't completely take the pain away, but it helps take the edge off. Maybe massaging your lower back would help you as well to at least take the edge off. But I also second seeing a chiropractor. I go to one every other week to help with migraines, and it's been helping a lot with this pregnancy too.
  • I had horrible lower back pain last week. I couldn't walk, or hold my daughter without wincing. My doctor recommended ice instead of heat. Tylenol didn't help me either. The midwife said that as the uterus grows, it puts pressure on the sacrum.
  • I have had extremely uncomfortable back pain on and off since week 5 (9w 5d). I had back pain and cramps together and my doctor said that I am fine. She said that when your uterus grows it can push against nerves that create discomfort in your back. And the cramping is round ligament pain, from growing. I bet you are ok. Call your Dr just to be sure. But I've literally sat for the entire day because when I get up I have shooting pain into my legs.
I use a heating pad when it's really bad! Hope you feel better soon.
  • Thanks for all the input! I adjusted my sleeping position and that seems to have helped more than anything else!
  • I have been experiencing lower left back pain for a week now, I am 12 weeks today.. this is the first time I experience this. never happened with my other pregnancies...  I can't help but worry.. its not too severe, just like an ache. anyone else going thru this? I read that it's quite common specially in second trimester.

  • My doctors response to pretty much any non-emergent symptom is "Congratulations, your pregnant" haha I too have arthritis in my lower back, ive never had any problems but my ex-rays show its there.  I am starting to get back pain too and thought it was pretty early, but Im also sleeping differently because im a stomach sleeper and its getting a little more uncomfortable to do that.  Im going to get more diligent about going to my chiropractor, and try to remember, even if baby isn't huge, its still very different than my body was 12 weeks ago and that can cause some changes.
