horrible smelling urine, up to pee at least 8 to 10 times a night

few weeks back had positive group strep b urinalysis. went for first prenatal appt about 3 weeks ago group b strep test negative. asked doc about the smell and she said no abnormal discharges or anything. i drink hardly any water i know i should but ive never been a big water drinker even when i played sports. the urologist thinks i have interstitial cystitis but i never had a diagnosis and the urologist cant do anything for me right now because im preggo. i only smell it when i go to pee but its strong. i understand its kidneys waste but it is bad and im the cleanest person ever. had a urine test done months ago through urologist and they said my crystal oxalate levels were high so im prone to kidney stones even though ive been lucky enough to never have one not sure if thats whats causing it.

i also have to get up to pee at least 8 10 times a night every 1 to 3 hours so of course my sleep is rocked every night. gyne perscribed me unisom and b6 for my nausea but all the unisom does is help me fall asleep not stay asleep.

anyone else have this issue? if i drank more water my urine wouldnt be as concentrated constantly but i had problems with peeing 20 40 times a day at least before i got pregnant and now is even worse and the smell when im peeing is pungent. also blood test few weeks ago was 83 blood sugar and it was not a fasting test so at least im not a pre diabetic of diabetic so thats not the issue w the smell

sorry tmi but wondering if anyone else has either of these issues

:(

  • I'm sorry I don't have expertise but I do think drinking more water will help and I don't think it will make you pee more due to the amount you are already going but hydration is so important for you and helps all aspects of health and life :) I try to drink half my weight in ounces each day or just shoot for slowly increasing it try to get 3-4 glasses of water.
1 right when you wake up one throughout the morning one in the afternoon and one in the evening :) hope things get better for you soon!

  • ive called doc theres no safe med u can have for this while preggo. i had been taking elmiron for the possible ic but its contraindicated in pregnancy as is the tramadol urologist gave me to help knock me out at night so i could sleep. urine culture bout 3 weeks ago neg for strep b all other tests at ob were good. called urologist they basically told me they cannot help me while im pregnant which of course sucks. if it is interstitial cystitis contributing to the constant peeing then that explains y i go so much. im going to try to increase water intake. i know im peeing more now at night cuz im pregnant but every 1 to 3 hours gets old so incredibly quick. i wish a doc could diagnose me or at least help somehow so i could get some answers. :/
  • You might lurk/search other birth month boards for this topic as there may be other moms who could give more advice but I agree @BostonBaby1 keep in contact with your OB about these concerns!

I've also noticed when I'm dehydrated from ms it's harder for me to stay asleep but if I can get some water in me it helps.

  • Oh try adding fruit or veggies such as cucumber, mint or basil to the water it helps it taste like other things :) I like to put a bag of frozen fruit in a pitcher of water overnight and by morning it's really tasty.

  • ok ill call doc tomorrow and ask.
  • Peeing 20-40 times a day is not normal. I'd go back to your doctor and demand further testing. Diagnostic tests should be able to get you some answers and you might be able to be referred to a high risk doc more familiar with what drugs could possibly help in this situation. Be your own advocate and don't take doctors brushing you off or saying they can't treat you.
  • I'm in agreement with previous posters. You may want to add in cranberry juice until you can get to the dr as I've heard it can help with a UTI.

  • I hope I can help some... I am diagnosed interstitial cystitis for years. And I have nothing that you are experiencing. I have always had frequent urination due to it and it causes burning (feels similar to a bladder infection but much more mild) if I don't follow the IC diet.. Which is very strict I am not sure if you have looked at it. BUT drinking water helps so much. I only get up usually 2 times to use the restroom in the night. I do not have any smell to my urine and never have with my IC. That is not normal, you need to contact your doctor and be seen right away. What you are describing does not sounds like IC to me. Elmeron is also a very expensive drug, I am surprised that they perscribed that without an official diagnosis. I paid over 400 a month with my insurance ...

Please do try drinking plenty of water. Look up the interstitial cystitis diet if you have not already.. No caffeine, no carbination, no acidic foods or drinks. Water and milk are really the only drink choices :/
    And see your doctor asap

Hope I was able to help some!
  • im going to call the ob tomorrow. the urologist said they could see me but could not prescribe any safe meds for me. google interstitial cystitis thats what we meaning me my urologist and pcp think i have. i never went to the last urology appt cuz my husband got all crappy with me and the last time i went we owed them about 200 bucks because his insurance isnt great and all i got out of the urologist did was talk to me for like 200 bucks out of pocket. im gonna call the ob tomorrow ive called before about it but ima call again. if i call my pcp all she will do is refer me to urologist or order me a urinalysis. the ob may order me a urinalysis so ull ask em tomorrow when i callm im gonna tell em ive had enough of it.
  • @pmnf26 great insight! Thanks for sharing!
@jkernicky sorry your post is super hard to understand. You google diagnosed yourself since the appt was too expensive sorry it's just rather jumbled but yes do any tests you need to and talk to the dr asap and why not do the diet she listed above wouldn't hurt and if she says it would help sounds like a good Idea.

  • I hope you get some answers! Yes elmeron is the only prescription drug for IC that's why it's so expensive, it is not safe during pregnancy. It helps build lining back in the bladder. My RE gave me some creams to help with the burning for when I do get it, that is safe during pregnancy. Hope you get relief soon
  • I will also warn you that to diagnose for IC they do a surgery where they inflate the bladder to check the lining and for ulcers. This does require anesthesia. My insurance was pretty decent at the time of my surgery and I still had to pay over 1,500. I stopped taking the elmiron after a few months because it is just way to expensive. The diet is the best way to control IC. If you are wanting to get diagnosed make sure to set aside some money for the cost of the surgery especially if the insurance isn't so good.

so glad you were able to find a method of controlling/helping it that was financially feasible! The test sounds really uncomfortable!

Wait no one else's pee is smelling strong ?? I drink so much water throughout the day and it still smells. I've had a uti in the past & the pee I have now is way stronger than that, and it doesn't hurt to pee either.

    (Edited bc typo)
  • @victoria98 I mean, my pee smells like pee, but not 'abnormal' or 'horrible smelling'.
  • @victoria98 no, my urine does not smell. I actually have a UTI at the moment. I was treated for one around week four and it seems to have returned. Urinary tract infections are super common during pregnancy. That's why they typically make you do a clean catch urine sample each OB visit.
  • @victoria98 my pee is definitely more pungent, and I attribute it to my prenatal vitamin. I take mine at night, so my midnight and morning pee are a bit more strong than usual. I wouldn't say it smells horrible or abnormal, but a stronger pee scent for sure. Also, I switched prenatals, and I think this one has too many b vitamins (especially when taken with my Dicelgis) so my pee is a bit radioactive yellow.
  • My pee smells foul literally everytime I use the restroom like very very abnormal. I haven't noticed a heightened sense of smell so I know it's not that & that it's my actual pee.
  • @BostonBaby1 omg good luck! They're horrible & I couldn't imagine going through one while also going through this 1st trimester!
  • @blissylissy86 I've been forgetting to take mine days in a row & my pee doesn't change with/without them so I know it's not that unfortunately.

When is the next time you see your OB? You should probably bring it up.

And thank you. Luckily I'm not symptomatic right now. The first go-round was very uncomfortable though. It was my first UTI ever.
  • @victoria98 has your o.b. done a U.A. yet? If you have unusual types/amounts of flora that normally prompts a call from your doc to discuss antibiotics. Good luck! :)
  • I agree with pp @victoria98. You may want to bring that up with a doctor. Even if your UA comes back normal, they may have suggestions.

@BostonBaby1 glad you aren't having symptoms now. I love how our entire systems get messed up while pregnant. "Hey, did you want a UTI while having to pee all the time? Lets do that!"

    Lol! So true.
  • @BostonBaby1 I feel ya. I'm currently on my second round of antibiotics for a uti since becoming pregnant. It would be awesome if it went away and didn't come back!!
  • @BostonBaby1 next one is next week & I'll definitely bring it up!

Let us know what they say?

What did your OB say? Did you go in to leave a urine sample?
  • I agree that if it is IC, drinking more water actually helps. I've always had issues down there and while it sucks, water helps. I'm currently on my second dose of antibiotics for a UTI and now have a yeast infection, on top of that I have IC, IBS and an inflamed bladder. I have to be careful what I eat and drink. You need to talk to your OB and see what they think is going on. My pee smells but it always has. When I'm pregnant it doesn't smell more, I'm just more aware of the smell. Let us know what the doc says!
  • @bostonbaby1 it turns out it was a uti! I honestly would've never guessed only because I didn't get the same burning sensation while peeing that I had the first time I had a uti a little over a year ago.

A UTI is not fun, but at least you can take antibiotics and hopefully it will knock it out of your system! Glad you got some answers. Feel better soon mama!
