Circumcision

This is my 2nd baby, but first boy, and we plan on having him circumcised.  Any of you have any tips or advice on circumcision?  What to expect?  Things to avoid?

Note: I am NOT asking for opinions on whether or not we should have him circumcised, just advice from those who have experience.  Thanks! :)

Re: Circumcision

  • I'm pregnant with my fourth baby, second son but chose not to circumcise. But from friends and family they have always made sure to have ointment to put on down there. I've been told it's very quick but obviously to be ready for a fussy/crying baby, but that does depend. Also I know over here they don't do circumcisions at the hospital but is done by your pediatrician. But no, no personal experience. :)

  • I can't quite remember how exactly we cleaned it but I remember it being really easy and uneventful. The nurses will teach you what to do.

Watch for possible bleeding. Disposable diapers can mask the amount of blood lost and it can be dangerous
  • Thank you ladies!

  • My OB/GYN did the circumcision before we went home from the hospital. Honestly I think less care was needed for the circumcision than the umbilical cord. We had to keep the area moist with either Bacitracin or Vaseline for a few days, keep a close eye on it for signs of infection and that was about it.

  • My OB did it before we left the hospital as well. They take the baby out of the room to do it. It's the only time the baby left my side at the hospital outside of his hearing test. Then you just have to keep gauze with Vaseline on it for about a week sometimes pulling down the little bit of skin left on it when you change diapers. Gauze gets changed out event time you change the diaper. So ask for some extra gauze and a tube of Vaseline before you leave the hospital.

  • our pedi went over what to do with the circumcision. We had to put Vaseline on the area each diaper change as to avoid re-adhesion of the raw flesh. you basically pull back just enough to expose the skin and put vaseline around it. I cannot remember exactly how long we had to do that, but at one of the appts, the pedi said it looks healed and that we can stop doing that. But it wasn't complicated to take care of it.
As far as the umbilical cord, we were told not to mess with it and to leave it until it naturally falls off.

  • With our first two boys (and with the boy out of this pair) it was done on day two of our hospital stay early in the morning. We put ointment and gauze on it at every diaper change. Watch for signs of infection (the nurses and doc will tell you what to look for) other than that just sort of leave it alone. He might be a little extra fussy, but not always.

  • It's been 19 years since I've dealt with a circumcision. Do they not put the little plastic thing on it anymore?

  • Same as everyone has said above, they will tell you exactly what to do. We just had to put generous amounts of Vaseline on it with gauze for every diaper change. We never had to pull the skin down or anything. It will look swollen and red but heals pretty quickly. You just have to watch out for bleeding. The worst thing about it was they were a little fussy right afterwards but my boys did pretty well with it.

They did with my oldest (who's almost 3) but not with our youngest (who's 18 months). However we did use a different Doctor each time.
  • Our pedi did it in the hospital as well and DS had no complications and i don't even remember him being fussy about it.  They will tell you exactly how to handle it but I remember we used Vaseline in the front of his diaper for a while just to make sure it didn't stick.  It really was not big deal for DS.

  • There is nothing you can do to prepare for it. He will scream and you will cry. The main this is to keep him in dry diapers and use lots of vasaline so it doesn't stick to the diaper. I'm having my second boy and I am dreading the circumcision part.
  • I followed my son to the nursery and the doc who was performing it suggested that I didn't stick around for the procedure.  I think he was implying it was harder on mom then on baby (which is probably true). I did feel guilty and cry (#hormones) about it, but I left the room and didn't watch.  He came back to me sound asleep and in great condition.  I see a midwife, so she asked one of the OBGYNs in her practice and he performed the circ. When we saw the pediatrician a few days later and they checked it and gave more specific instructions on care.  Overall, super easy but as a first time mom, I was very worried about it! Months later, I went to a bris and was amazed at how quick a circ was and how little the baby cried.  Granted it is much easier to see/think about it when it is not your own kid!
  • It went pretty smoothly for my son..... we were told to keep A&D on it (I would just squeeze a gob from the tube every time I changed his diaper) until it was healed which from what I remember took a week at most.  He was a bit fussy right after it was done, but after that he was fine.

  • an OB from my doctor's practice did it for us in the hospital before we went home.  I wasn't there for the actual circumcision, but my husband said baby seemed okay after a couple seconds (he came back and nursed and seemed fine!).  we used a lot of Vaseline and gauze the first few days (to prevent any sticking to the diaper) and it seemed healed pretty quickly.
