Bummed I have to redo the cell free dna test

So bummed. The perinatal office called and I was ready and waiting for the results of the cell free dna test I had done two weeks ago. Nope. They said the results were unclear and the sample needed to be redone. They said it happens less than 1% of the time. I'm 15 weeks already so thought I'd know something by now. But now, waiting times two. :(
Has anyone else had this happen? I know it could be worse so time to pull on the big girl panties and carry on.

  • Omg that's lame! So sorry you have to deal with that and the waiting all over again. :(
  • Loading the player...
  • Lame is right!! I would be frustrated too. The waiting game is definitely the worst. Hopefully they do their best to get the second results as quick as possible!!
  • I'm just skeptical because I contacted the lab about an hour before I got the call to check on the status. An hour later my doctor contacted me saying they needed a new sample. It just seems fishy or too coincidental. I'm questioning even having it done again. I don't know.
  • My office called with the same. I was told that I did not have enough free fetal DNA sample in my blood and to try again on 2 to 3 weeks.
    Eh, it happens.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • Curious which test you all did for the cell free DNA where they said they needed another draw.
  • So what are you skeptical of? You think they just lost it or something? What's the conspiracy theory here? (Not in a bad way - just curious.)
  • @LinzerBinzer yeah something just seemed off.
I ended up calling counsyl to try to find out what went wrong. They said that with the holidays and them receiving the sample but then having to send to a different company for this screening called I think Illumina or something (they don't do it themselves apparently) that it didn't get there within the 5 days required. FedEx never showed up and the courier didn't get it there in time and other excuses. So timing. Very Disappointing.
I asked why they didn't tell me sooner and I think really they don't have a procedure in place for this, but they said the other lab had to return it to them which took a few extra days.
I feel like they handled it pretty badly so I'm pretty sure I will just cancel.
  • Ugh. Make sure they don't bill your insurance or you for the services you didn't get. Good luck!
  • That's really interesting, Counsyl and illumina are down the street from each other so the samples for this get directly driven within hours (or so I've been told). Not having results because of a low fetal fraction definitely does happen.
  • GoBadgers that just sucks. I feel like the lab(s) really dropped the ball. My draw happened on 12/23, was received by Counsyl 12/28 and not delivered to Illumina until 12/29. :(
  • So there was nothing said to be wrong with my sample quality but it was rejected for being past 5 days.
  • Not only that but I wasn't told anything until today. I checked in this morning and counsyl never mentioned there was any problem. Then an hour later I hear about this problem from my dr. Not cool.

Because those lab companies can not reveal any results, good bad or inclusive. All they can do is verify that is has been received and/or being processed.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • Sounds like a big mess. Regardless it sounds like you should have been told ASAP to have a re-draw. As a clinician, when sending In a genetic testing to specialized labs I always check to see if samples are being received on certain days because often, on holidays, labs may not receive samples (and many labs don't receive samples on Sundays). I wonder if that might have been part of the issue. I don't know what counsyls schedule was during the holidays, but it was something I thought about when I scheduled my own nipt (the mfm I saw uses a different lab). I typically wouldn't schedule someone for a blood draw right before the holidays unless I double checked with the lab and knew they were still receiving samples as usual. Could have been a mess up on many ends. Regardless, I would be livid if my blood took 5 days to get to the lab and no one bothered to tell me for another week. Not cool. So sorry you have to wait so much longer. Would you consider asking for expedited? It can't hurt to ask Counsyl given the circumstances. Although I feel likely your doctors office might have been the error as likely Counsyl wasn't receiving shipments 12/24-27 (but no way to know now and I really have no idea) so maybe they won't be super accommodating, can't hurt to ask!
  • @GoBadgers you make good points.
I will look into that possibility. My Dr was really optimistic about the timing even with the holidays but it does seem like they weren't on top of it, too.

@PugsandKisses I don't know about that because Counsyl gave me lots of details (excuses) when I called them back. It just seems like they had no record of the problem until after I called to check the status - I wonder how long it would have taken if I hadn't checked in.
  • I'm still waiting for my results that were drawn on the 17th. They will probably tell me the same thing. Buttholes.
  • I had mine done and got a result on the testing for the abnormalities within 7 days. However the lab technician wrongly entered that I opted out on knowing the gender :( We then waited 6 days for the result due to the holiday. I know it sucks hang in there.
  • So sorry that this happened. Were you the one that wanted to do the Councyl particularly because of insurance? I'm sorry about my poor memory. I could use the search function, but I'm so tired. I'll use it in the morning if you haven't had the chance to respond.

Have you thought about using a different company? Perhaps one that goes quicker? Also, they definitely dropped the ball. They had your blood for too long and that just stinks.

    @BostonBaby1 yes that was me
I'm debating on whether I should redo the test (with another lab is a good idea) or just wait for my anatomy u/s in 3 weeks and do additional testing if something comes up during that.

Very tough decision to make. I history of bad experiences so I would personally redo it with a different lab… But if you feel comfortable waiting to the A/S, that might work better for you. I hope it all works out! Again, I'm sorry for my lapse in memory. I'm blaming baby brain.
