What side do you sleep on?

edited January 2016 in April 2016 Moms
Random poll for fun! Just curious as to whether or not there is any correlation between the side you sleep on and whether or not your having a boy or girl. I know there are a lot of people who toss and turn, but what side is most comfortable would you say?

Re: What side do you sleep on?

  • Most of the time I'm sleeping on the right side, I'm having a boy. But lately in the last couple of days I've been sleeping on my left side because of my toothache.

  • Mostly my left side, having a boy. But honestly, I toss and turn all night now.

    whatever is comfortable.

Eta: now that you've asked and I've paid more attention, I'm mostly on my right side. I was a stomach sleeper pre-pg.

    eta: Girl.

  • Left side, since that's the best position for heartburn relief, team green.

  • I'm having a boy and sleep mostly on my left (although I do switch at night), but that is because the left side is usually recommended, not because I prefer it...
  • I definitely feel most comfortable on my right side hugging long part of my Snoogle but I toss and turn at least a few times per night now
  • I start out on my left side and end up on my right. I go for comfort. Trust me as baby gets bigger it won't matter what side as long as you can sleep.

  • I am most comfortable sleeping on my left side as my right side will often hurt after laying there for too long. The LO hates for me to lay on the left and kicks until I move. Lately I have been kind of laying on my back with a pillow propped under me to keep me from laying completely on my back

  • I fall asleep on my left, but I wake up on my back a lot. I have sinus issues that usually prevent me from sleeping on my right side.
  • I sleep on my left side because I sleep on the left side of the bed and don't want to put my body pillow between DH and I. When I want to sleep on my right, I spoon DH but he's usually cuddling the cat, so I just roll back to my left.
  • I sleep on my left just to help with heartburn. I used to sleep on both sides though.

What sucks now is that with back pain, hip pain, and heartburn, the only comfy position is on my back, which of course you're supposed to avoid when pregnant. I'm this close to saying eff it, because I would kill for one night of good sleep.

    Sorry for the rant ;)

  • I typically "sleep" on my left side.  I do toss and turn when my hips and back gets sore though.  I try to stick to my left because it's much better for my blood pressure (which I am being monitored for).
  • Mostly left and having a boy. Lately its been both sides because my hips tend to hurt within the hour. My belly feels heavier on my right side (weird).
  • I switch a lot but I try to sleep on my right side more because, according to my husband, I snore worse on my left side.
  • Well I will be the oddball here. Try as I may to fall asleep on my left side, I always end up on sleeping lying on my back. (Not upset about it one bit...). Also, we are team green :)

I have been back sleeping quite a bit too. I am not sure why stuff says not to do that and if it's really an issue but it is comfortable and I keep ending up on my back.

It can disrupt blood flow to the baby.

I have read that but stuff isn't very specific. Does that mean at all weeks of pregnancy? Even if it doesn't hurt your back? And some things specify "flat on your back" so if you aren't totally flat is it safe? What about if you are like half turned on your back? Side, stomach and back are not absolutes. There is half-stomach and half-back position.
  • I attempt to sleep on my left (since it's recomended) but always end up turning to my right within about 30 minutes because it's more comfortable, having a girl. Honestly though, once I'm asleep, I still end up on my back most nights so I think that the position my body prefers.

  • I asked my doctor if it was a big deal to sleep on my back, and he said not to worry about it at all.
  • I sleep on my back and both sides. I try to fall asleep on my left side but often find my back is more comfortable - I sometimes get tingling in my legs/arms from decreased circulation when lying on my side!!

My doctor says it's more important to get a good night's sleep than worry about which position you're sleeping in.
Plus you move around whilst asleep and if there were any blood flow issues your body would automatically wake you up/make you feel uncomfortable anyway.
  • I fall asleep on my right side and I'm having a girl. Usually halfway through the night when I wake up I flip over and reposition in my snoogle and try to sleep on my left. Baby girl doesn't like it when I sleep on my left side though and almost always kicks me till I got back to being on my right side.

  • I was a stomach sleeper but now I sleep on the left (team green). The only reason I don't sleep on the right is because my cat sleeps against me on the right and I need to have my arms up by my face. With the cat there I would have to plop my arms right on him- he wouldn't like that and I spoil him so left it is

  • I switch sides every few hours, but I always start on my left (having a girl) and I generally stay asleep a little longer when I'm on my left side.

@NOLA520 your ticker just gave me the biggest craving for mac and cheese!!! ohhhhh em gee!!

Anyway - I try to sleep on my left side because that's what my ob recommended. It's usually more of a half stomach/half side sleep though, and frequently wake up on my back and even my stomach sometimes though and just correct myself. On a related note, DH got me a snoogle for Christmas (per my request) and I'm sad to report that so far I HATE it. It's nice for lounging around, but I find it so cumbersome for sleeping! I'm hoping it will be more valuable when I'm bigger but right now it just gets in the way. womp womp!

Earlier in pregnancy I preferred left. But now I'm just tossing and turning all night that sleep is nonexistent!

ETA: I got a little penis inside of me. Having a boy
  • Pre-pregnancy, I was 100% a left side sleeper. All night every night. As soon as I started getting a belly, my left side was the most uncomfortable position ever to sleep in. I'm now sleeping on the right - generally, I fall asleep on my side, but wake up at least partially on my back. Any time I fall asleep on my left side, I wake up with my arm dead about 2 hours later, or, if I somehow manage to sleep through the night, a major backache.
  • I vote boy-right side because more often than not that's how I fall asleep, but I still wake up on my stomach (as I did the whole pregnancy with DD). My OB said if it's comfortable enough to not wake you up, any position is fine and not to stress about back/belly/sides.

  • I try my hardest to sleep on my left side, because that's what we're "supposed" to do, but it's so much more comfy on my right side. Normally I'm a back sleeper, and I wake up on my back all the time. I don't know, I've tried pillows to keep my on my side, but I wake up on top of them..on my back. The body wants what the body wants I guess. My doctor says everything is "perfect" when it comes to LO so I guess it's all good. And most recently, in the last 2 days, I've just tossed and turned and not really gotten a lot of sleep. So there's that. Fun times!

    Baby due April 6!
  • Team green here. I sleep on whichever side is so comfortable before my hips and lower back start to ache and I am forced to switch sides
  • I sleep on both sides, my back, and sometimes even my stomach. I only intentionally sleep on my sides...
  • Just based upon what I've read, and my first time mom idiosyncrasies, I sleep solely on my left side.  I can feel my baby mostly on my right, so I also sleep on the left as to not 'smoosh' him.  I know I'm probably being anal about it, but oh well.  My left hip sure suffers for it ......

  • I'm having a boy, and though I try to sleep on my left, the right is often the most comfortable. I often sleep with a pillow wedged behind me so that it almost feels like I'm sleeping on my back, but supported enough on my side that the weight of the belly isn't on me. Over half the time I wake up fully on my back though, but that can make me so sore!
