Anyone have experience with a little boy with penile adhesions?

We have just come to discover at the 6 month appt that our little guy, who is very chunky, has penile adhesions all the way around. We have been pulling it back to clean at every diaper change since he was healed from circumcision. Apparently not forcefully enough. It is constantly hidden due to his prominent fat pad so I imagine that is what created the problem. I have just started applying Vaseline again with every change to prevent it worsening. Our doctor was able to gently release it some what in office. We are taking him to a pediatric urologist to have it further evaluated. Of course we can't get in for another 2 months! Basically I feel like a bad mom and am worried sick over it. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Anyone have experience with a little boy with penile adhesions?

  • Our pedi just told us at his 6m appt that it was 'trying' to reattach, and for the first time told us about pulling the skin back. This had been discussed on this board previously (pulling the skin back), and I had asked at the 4m appt if we should have been doing it, and was told it was doing fine so no worries. But we were not told at the time of circ to do it, which annoys me because if it hadn't been for this board I might not have known to ask. And then to be told I didn't need to do it, and here we are now being told to do it. I'm just a little annoyed at the whole situation

Anyway, to more accurately answer your question - we have a little bit going on here, but it doesn't seem to need any correction other than pulling back every diaper change.
Try not to beat yourself up, it sounds like you were doing the right thing... You were doing more than we were by already pulling back at every change!

  • ^^^^ Same. I've been pulling back but need to be pulling harder...
  • Try not to beat yourself up its very common because peds/docs don't educate how hard you need to pull back.

How long are we supposed to be doing this?

I still do it....... That's a very good question. I assume until the fat pads are gone (we have a big old fat pad that pushes the skin up and around it so it needs cleaned/pulled back often.
We just do it once a day in the bathtub
  • Were your LO's circs done with stitches? My guy had surgery to correct penile torsion and they did the circumcision as part of the surgery. It was stitched and then glued. I asked the urologist about pulling anything back and he said absolutely not - I'm guessing the stitches are the difference?
  • ^^ interesting. (Tho I'm sorry your LO had to have surgery @klirwin82 )

  • @klirwin82 no a circ is not done with stitches.
Yours is a different circumstance/diff procedure.
  • I'm guessing they had a reason to put stitches in but normally a circ doesn't have them
  • @klkonwi Is it normally just glued? Yes, the stitches were awful. I was already worked up about him being under anesthesia and then seeing the stitches was gruesome. So relieved it's healed.
  • Glad to see this post. I was wondering the same thing as @mellymar...how long are we supposed to do this?

I have continued doing this since his circ healed but clearly not pulling hard enough because my LOs has somewhat reattached! So today I was a little more forceful with pulling it down, and some white stuff oozed out!! :s it's now a little red around that area...nothing alarming but it is slightly red. I'm going to ask his doctor about this but was wondering if anyone has dealt with this?

I feel terrible for not doing a better job and being more aware of the fact that it's starting to reattach :/

  • So I could see that my LO was starting to reattach. I took him to the urologist this morning and he had to pull at it to separate it better. Now I need to pull it back at every diaper change and use Vaseline for the next 6 months. I think this is bc it was not emphasized enough. He handled it very well this morning but I am so grateful hot the snow day so I can be home with him and changing his diapers today.
  • I have a question. My DH was wondering what would happen if we did not keep pulling it down. How would it affect him in the future?  Anyone know?
  • Yes he would have to be recircumsized if the skin reattached.
  • When we were deciding whether or not to circumcise LO, all the "pro" arguments were that it was a quick thing, with low risk of any complications. Reading everyone's experiences here, I feel like circumcision is yet another area of babies/parenting where there's a lot of dishonesty and misinformation.

This is in no way a value judgment for or against circumcision, or a criticism of any mother/parent and their decision on the topic.
