Breast pump to induce labour

Did anyone else find using a breast pump helped to induce labour? I used it with my first but I was already overdue so I might have been a coincidence that it started the next morning. I didn't have one with my second so didn't try it. I'm 39 weeks and the midwife said I can do it but I just don't want to find it doesn't work and make myself even more uncomfortable.

Re: Breast pump to induce labour

  • Why not at least try? I know if you got any colostrum out you can freeze it and use it after LO is born.

  • I tried just about everything when I was overdue with my second, nothing worked. She stubbornly came at 42 weeks. But it can't hurt to try!
  • It may work, for me it causes seriously painful contractions for a few hours that result in nothing...

  • I've heard that it can cause extremely long and painful contractions that do not dilate your cervix. I wouldn't do it if I were you. I think the best natural labour induction is regular gentle walking, but that's just me :)
  • I have flat/inverted nipples and have used a breast pump a few times to see if I can help draw them out. I have yet to be able to, however I have had zero contractions and am still very much pregnant
