sleeping through the night?

My 10 week old is still waking up every 3 hours and he always nurses. I go back to work in a month and am worried about getting enough sleep, as I am up at least 3 to 4 times a night. I am not really a believer in the "cry it out" method either as he is not even 3 months yet. Any advice?

Re: sleeping through the night?

  • I went back to work yesterday and little one is 13 weeks. She goes to bed around 9 PM and usually use beeps until 2 AM and feeds. It usually takes us about 45 minutes to get her back to sleep and she will sleep until 6 AM. She lately has been very restless in the second half of her sleep. She does not wake up but she seems to toss and turn at times with her eyes close so I just leave her so that I can get some sleep before I get up for work. It is tough when you go back and you are sleep deprived but you get used to it. That's what coffee is for!

  • That sounds pretty normal.  It's tough but you'll make it through!  Just try to go to bed right when you put him down for the night.  My 12 week old is still getting up about every 3 hours and I'm back at work.  You adjust!  And yawn a lot.
  • Is LO definitely hungry during those wake ups? He could just want cuddling or reassurance. Something I read said to have your partner soothe them to see if that's it. If you do it LO will smell your milk and may want to nurse even though they're not hungry. Worth a shot!
  • My LO is 11 weeks tomorrow and still wakes up every 3 hours (sometimes 2!) overnight to eat. She did have a 4-hr stretch twice this week for the first time, so I can see a light at the end of the tunnel!

It's normal, and it WILL get better. Some babies just aren't ready to sleep for those long stretches yet.

My LO is also on the small side - was 5lbs 12oz when we left the hospital and still just 8lbs at her 6-week check-up. (We have an appt on Thurs so we'll see how much she weighs then.) She needs to grow just a little more before sleeping all night, her tummy can't hold enough to last her that long!
  • Thanks all! It helps to know that it's normal. I was getting worried as I read on another post that their babies were sleeping 5 to 6 hours a night already. I will also try to see if he just needs comfort instead of nursing. He is a big boy though so he may just want to eat but it is worth a shot. :)
  • I have to wake my lo up to eat at night, because at ten weeks she is still only 8lbs 14 oz, but she would sleep all night as I found out one night when I didn't set the alarm. On the other hand my brothers 18 month old wakes up 2 times every night and won't sleep until he has a diaper change and something to drink. Every baby is different. It will take time to adjust.
