Positive quad screen

After my anatomy scan last week they took my blood for the quad screen. The only reason I didn't decline was because my son was born with some heart defects (he is otherwise a healthy almost 2 year old) that we didn't know about until he was born and had we known, we could have been better prepared. My OB just called and told me based on the blood work that the chances of Down syndrome went from I in 10,000 based on my age to 1 in 80. I have to go back today for the Harmony blood work. She told me not to stress because her measurements all looked good on the scan and the odds are in our favor, but I can't help it.
I know there are lots of false positives with this test but I still can't help but think the very worse. I'm sitting in my car at work trying to calm myself down and remind myself that she will be loved no matter what. Just looking for some support from my June moms. I know many of you have been through this.

Re: Positive quad screen

  • I'm so sorry that you're having to go through that. I'm a FTM so I don't have firsthand experience with this, But It's scary even if the odds are in your favor. I know it seems impossible right now, but just try to stay positive and continue with the further testing your doctor recommended. I'll have my fingers (and toes) crossed and hope everything turns out okay!

  • Look at it this way, the quad screen has around a 5% false positive rate and gave you a 79 in 80 chance of having a normal, healthy baby. If there are no other indicators of downs, do your best to not stress about it until you get a more definitive test back. Easier said than done, I know, because I would be freaking out if I was in your situation. **creepy internet hugs**
  • I know getting news like that must be hard to hear, and a jump from 1/10000 to 1/80 can be scary. Maybe think of it this way: a 1/80 chance still means your baby has only a 1.25% chance of Down's, which is still incredibly small. I'd bet on those odds, for sure. And, like your doc said, baby's measurements looked great. All data still points to baby being perfectly healthy!

On the other hand, if your baby does happen to fall into the 1.25%, saying your baby will be loved no matter what is a wonderful attitude.

    Hang in there, mama. Hugs.
  • How stressful.  I hope that you can find some peace while waiting.

  • I too would bet on those odds.  1.25% chance (not including the false positive problems with quad tests) is still very small.  I can only imagine how stressed you must be nonetheless.  HUGE hugs to you.

When did she say you would get the Harmony test results back?
  • Thoughts and prayers for you. I think you outlook is great though. Proud of you!

  • I'm sorry I'll be praying for you! I'm sure this is so stressful but as PP have said, those are still REALLY SMALL odds that there are any issues & your scan looked great. Stay positive Momma and like you said, your baby will be loved no matter what! You can do this :) We're all here to support you!

  • Sending hugs and thoughts to you! As others have said, the odds are still in your favor, but l know it is hard not to stress about these little ones! Hopefully you're able to get the harmony test and results quickly. Thinking of you!
  • @VikingGirl12 that must be very scary. I'm sorry and I hope the Harmony test comes back quickly and eliminates the issue entirely. *Hugs.*

As pp said, without any corresponding issues noted in the NT scan, the odds your OB gave you are lower than they seem. (Why on earth they say 1 in 80 I will never know, it's the worst way to phrase that statistic!)
  • Sorry you are going through this. The odds really are in your favor! FX you get your harmony results back quickly.

    Sending you lots of hugs.

I got a call at 4:45pm yesterday that my second trimester bloodwork for the sequential prenatal screening came back "screen positive" for Down with a 1 in 170 chance (cutoff is 1 in 200). I have the followup ultrasound tomorrow and will be getting blood drawn for NIPT (not sure which brand they use, Harmony or one of the others). I know my numbers are less scary than yours, but I'm waiting it out along with you, so PM me if you want to chat. I was up late last night not sleeping and Googling things I probably shouldn't be Googling.

The odds are very much in your favor, especially with nothing showing up on the anatomy scan. Hopefully the Harmony results will come back fast.

  • Oh boy, can I relate to you on this one. I think the best way I can make you feel better is to tell you that my odds were 1 in 6. It was TERRIFYING. I went from 1 in 350 (based on my age being 35) to 1 in 6. My midwife called me and made me leave work and she came to my house to tell me. She was very somber and prepared me for the worst. It was awful. But everything was totally fine.

I know there is always the chance of being "the one" in whatever number - but that chance is still SO slim. My panorama test results came back perfectly fine and my odds are now less than 1 in 10000.

I sort of hate this testing- despite understanding that it IS there to help. I am thinking of you and have my fx. I honestly think everything will turn out a-ok. Creepy stranger hugs for you!

  • You seem to have a great outlook!  Thoughts and prayers that it was just a false positive.

  • Hang in there! That still seems like pretty good odds that everything is fine. Keep us posted how the results of the harmony turn out.

  • I'm so sorry you are dealing with this anxiety. Praying things turn out well. I do know a lot of cases where they were wrong on this, but that doesn't usually pacify the stress a mother feels. Just know we are thinking of you!
  • Praying for you and your little one! Please keep us updated on the Harmony results when they come in. Sending lots of hugs your way!!
  • Thank you everybody for the positive thoughts and prayers! I knew I could come here for that. I will definitely update when we get the Harmony results back. Both DH and I are staying positive and realizing it could be so much worse.
@mkemommy it takes 10 long days. I'm assuming business days.
@vulpini I'm sorry you're going through this too. I don't think the numbers really matter, high or low, when you get a phone call like that. All you can think of is the chance that something may be wrong. Let me know your results when you get them! Sending prayers.
@CourtJack I remember you posting about the midwife coming and telling you that. I told you they were still good odds, so I need to listen to my own words. I'm so glad everything came back good for y'all! And how nice to know that your chance is even less than most everybody else's!

  • In the beginning of December I have the free cell DNA testing done, just so we can know the sex sooner, and received a phone call, the week before Christmas, that we were testing positive for chromosomal abnormalities. Up until then I hadn't done much research on the test, and asked my doctor about accuracy, and he said they were basically 100% accurate. I went to a genetic counselor and had an abdominal CVS test done, which was very painful, as well as a NT scan. The counselor said we had a 75% chance of being positive. We got our preliminary results back on Christmas eve and all was negative, but it was the worst 9 days of my life. All I did was cry. I didn't go Christmas shopping, clean my house, see my friends, nothing. You're odds are way better than mine were, so I'm very confident you will have the same good results from your testing. Try to stay strong, I know how hard it is right now! *hugs*
