Amniotic fluid..discharge...urine..

So I'm 38w1d.

I'm a host at a restaraunt. I'm standing there and I felt this rush of fluid and my panties became wet. Went to the bathroom and it wasn't urine, and it wasn't thick enough for me to write it off as discharge. Called my OB, she's not available, so they direct me to the on call OB at my office. She says to put on a pad, wait 30 minutes, and go back and see if I'm still leaking. Well my pad is wet, but now it's too thick for me to rule out discharge.

I don't want to leave work to go to the hospital and have them tell me it's just discharge. But I'm strep B positive and if this is labor, I need to get hooked up to the IV (and also obviously baby needs the amniotic fluid so if I'm leaking then I need to go in). But the OB said if it seemed like just discharge I didn't need to go in.

I don't know, am I paranoid or should I go in anyway just to be totally sure?

  • With DS my water leaked then it happened about 10 minutes later. It could be some of your mucus plug but I would rather be safe than sorry. If it were me I would probably go get checked out.

  • Wow. I probably would not risk it--especially if you have strep B.
Did the doctor on call know you were positive? My doctor always seems to err on the side of caution, and I'm glad. I never feel foolish calling, and he's sent me to the ER twice now. Both were legit reasons once I got there, but could have been written off very easily.
  • Hmm a tricky one - I too tested positive for strep B so freak out at everything unusual. I have so experienced what you describe but on (sorry TMI) smelling the stuff that came out I have concluded its discharge. Having said that i've had 3 occasions over the past 3 days of strong contractions/braxton hicks lasting for 2 hours each before disappearing! Perhaps I've misjudged things but I am hoping I'm correct as this is my fourth baby and when my waters broke with one of the others there was no mistaking It was gone (I was soaking through thick pads in seconds).

That all said you should probably get checked out just I put your mind at rest. Good luck xxx
  • I had more or less the same experience this morning (38+2) and my advice nurse told me to go in to L&D just in case, so I did. I was not having any other symptoms of labor. It was not my water breaking after all, but I'm glad I went for peace of mind. In your shoes I would go.
  • There is NOT a "clear difference" or so many women wouldn't be confused by it. The best advice I got was to smell it- sounds gross, I know. Apparently amniotic fluid smells sweet- I was told it should smell a bit like semen- where as urine smells like, well, pee, and discharge should smell more vinegar-y.
  • This has happened to me twice and both times it's been BV. It's the most annoying thing in the world but I wouldn't have known I had it if I hadn't gone and and it still needs to be addressed ASAP.
  • When my water broke I wouldn't have necessarily known. I was in the hospital already and felt myself leak but it wasn't enough that I for sure knew it wasn't discharge. My midwife said the babies head acted like a plug and only a bit came out. She still has to pop another sack to get the rest.

  • I've had this happen twice and it was watery discharge both times. It turned out to be a thrush infection! It can be very confusing as you can feel a definite trickle of liquid type stuff.
  • I've been feeling similar concerns as I too tested positive. Every time I feel a little more discharge than normal I head straight to the bathroom to check (let's face it Chances are I would be heading there soon anyways to pee).

Hoping everything went well and you were able to get it figured out! Best wishes!!
  • I had similar and my midwife advised it was likely part of my mucus plug. Opaque colour with a urine consistency ... threw me off too because it wasn't mucusy.
  • I'm currently in L&D for what I thought was leaking. Turns out it was discharge. That was my excitement for the day. Waiting to go home now.
