Hair changes?

So, I've always had very thick, wavy hair, and ever since I got pregnant, people have been telling me that pregnancy does wonders for your hair (making it softer, shinier, more luxurious, etc.) However, it's had the opposite effect on me! My hair now is very dry and unruly, and the waves have turned into frizzy curls. I can't do anything with it other than throw it up in a messy bun.

Has anyone else noticed their hair changing, whether for better or worse? For those of you not exactly loving the changes, do you have a certain product or hairstyle that helps?

Re: Hair changes?

  • With DS my hair grew fast and was thick, but with this pregnancy it is falling out like woah. I am just washing it less often, no special products.

  • Lately I have no energy to do my hair ( wavy/frizzy kind of straight) so I'm just piling it on my head. I know my hair gets dry in the winter just because of the dryness. But haven't see much different.

I've generally had pretty great hair this pregnancy, it's been one of the few perks in the first trimester. That being said, it was like a swamp out there in southeastern NC last week so my thick and curly hair was HUGE.

A lot of people have told me that you don't lose any hair during pregnancy, but I'm still losing a fair amount. Not an alarming amount, I don't think, but definitely not none. I only wash it once a week, so I'm not too worried about it. I'm actually hoping it means I'll lose less on the postpartum hair loss end of things (probably wishful thinking, I know).

  • Also, @elldel I can't tell you what a difference on my big/curly/frizzy hair scaling back to once a week washing it has been. I've also been making my own shampoo for the past year (jojoba oil & dr b's soap + filtered water) and it has REALLY cut down on the frizziness. It took me a while to transition from almost daily washing to once a week, but once my hair adjusted it made a world of difference for how it looked overall and how the curls formed.

  • Just wait until about 3 months postpartum.  All your hair will fall out.  DS is 1 year now and I have so many flyaways from it growing back and they are all at the exact same length.  I look like I just stuck my finger in a electrical socket, because they all stick straight up. I will join you in the bad hair club.

  • I'm loving the pregnancy hair! I have thick, wavy, coarse hair too. Pregnancy has made it even thicker and I've been measuring and its growing faster too! It used to fall out by the handful and now it never falls out. Mine gets dry and frizzy in the dry winter air so I've taken to washing it every 4-6 days, so once, maybe twice a week. This seems to have cured the thick hair dandruff issues and brushing it keeps the shine all over and no greasy roots. Hopefully trying to adjust your routine a bit will help you figure it out. When my ends are dry I also put coconut oil just at the very ends. Good luck and hope you find your hair "glow".
  • Pregnancy hair is annoying but post pregnancy hair is sad. It just all falls out.
  • I'm really hoping to resist the urge to chop it all off when it starts to fall out. I chopped it all off right after we got married and out of stubbornness kept it short for a few years. It looked TERRIBLE. My hair is way too big to be short. Here's hoping I can remember those dark days when the urge to chop it takes over.

  • I have really thick wavy/curly hair and I've noticed it's more dry and frizzy. I've been washing it less to try and battle it especially since it's winter, but I really hope it goes back to normal eventually!
  • My wavy curly hair is just as frizzy as normal. It falls out as normal. No changes here.

However I had great hair with my first, and my hair feel out in clumps with my 2nd. So both is normal.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • My hair used to be decently thick but now it's thin. Like almost as thin as it was when I had an eating disorder. I hate it. But it is growing a lot faster! Just in 14 weeks it's a little over an inch longer! I had bangs right before I got pregnant so I'm having fun measuring how much they have grown!
  • I forgot someone told me hair falls out after baby! Scary!!

  • Great suggestions, @elenabrent and @noelietrex ...thanks! I also heard hair falls out postpartum, so I guess we just can't win, can we?
  • I'm with @Singingmama10. My hair was still falling out from my last pregnancy and I have all these annoying little baby hairs that stand straight up around my face. Hoping it will grow fast so I won't have to look so stupid. My hair did look great last pregnancy though, I just lost it all immediately after.
  • Here's what I'm skeptical about - your hair is made of dead cells, right? So how can hair 10" away from your head change texture/curl with pregnancy? Makes sense that we could only have about an inch or two of new "pregnancy hair" right now.

So... Help me out here? What am I missing?
  • I have super thick wavy oily hair normally. It's been falling out like CRAZY since BFP - I'm actually super excited. Hell, I'd be super excited if more fell out postpartum. It's so BIG normally and FL is so humid, so if it wants to be thinner, I'll just be excited. Unfortunately it's also greasier than normal, which is an accomplishment. I have spent two years only washing once a week to try to combat the natural grossness, and the last three months have been a battle, but I think either approaching 2nd tri is helping it settle down, or it's finally readjusted to the washing schedule in the last three months. I am no longer ashamed to have my scalp visible in public.

  • @LinzerBinzer whoa never thought about that so true!

On an unrelated note I struggle with psoriasis and eczema great combo right? And can't take any of my medications for it due to them containing steroids dr did say I can restart them now I'm in 2nd tri but in the winter it gets so bad due to the dryness and cold does anyone else struggle with these and any conditioning or other things that have helped? Otherwise I might try to see the dermatologist and try a less harsh solution just want to be cautious.

  • For my birthday I'm asking my sister (who works in a salon) the Nioxin series. I haven't had my hair fall out yet, but it happened to almost everyone in my family.
  • My hair is starting to thin out around the part and the crown of my head. I have to have it up in a bun/ponytail or else you can see my scalp! It has also been getting more oily. I naturally have thicker hair so it's nice that it has thinned out overall but just wished my scalp stayed covered haha!

  • I normally have thick wavy hair (it's been in a pixie cut for 2 years now). I got it cut about a month and a half ago and usually don't need to get it tamed/trimmed/shaped until month 3 or so. But my hair has just been a fluffy thick mess. I've just been keeping my beanie on at work bc it's just a hot mess 99% of the time.

  • A little after I found out I was pregnant my hair started falling out. It has stopped since then but no amazing growth or shine or whatever yet. Still waiting!
  • @thebigoaktree for the win! Purple is awesome!
  • Anybody else getting some dandruff ? I'd say winter could be a reason but I haven't had this much dandruff since elementary school!
  • My hair is usually pretty curly, but now the curls are starting to be more frizzy and kind of straightening out. It's a nightmare! I also can't wait to dye my hair! Waiting a little longer into the 2nd tri. Anyone else?

My hair was falling out at an alarming rate after my bfp. Showers were scary. It seems to have slowed down. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that I got pregnant right after the EDD of my MMC? Had I stayed pregnant, that would have been when my post-partum shedding would have happened.

  • I have pretty straight thick black hair. It's growing crazy fast and still thick and shiny. I haven't noticed any change other than the growth.
  • @victoria98 Yes, all of the dandruff. I have always been prone to it, but since BFP it's been a nightmare. I decided not to do anything special to help it and it's now back mostly to normal levels at 13 weeks.

  • I wish I was one of those beautiful pregnancy unicorns. My hair doesn't get shiny and luscious... it's normally  super thick but fine, and if I let it air dry it's a weird half straight, half curly, frizzy mess. It pretty much doesn't change except maybe grows a little faster (although it already grows quite quickly). The main difference is I'm too tired to style it, so it goes in a bun or pony tail every day. My skin is also not beautiful and glowing - I'm shiny and breaking out. I got a zit on my eyelid. MY EYELID. So painful.
  • Oh, @DobbysSock, I am so with you on the skin issues! I am breaking out all over. Pregnancy glow has yet to come my way.
  • @LinzerBinzer i think a lot of the changes have to do with the amount and type of oil you are (or are not) making. The size/shape of the strand doesn't change, but the "weight" of the hair can change from oil changes.

Also--the thickness is because of an extension in the hair cycle.  Normally, a hair follicle goes through a cycle like this...."make hair (grow) -> rest -> fall out -> make hair -> rest -> fall out...."  All the hairs are doing this at different times, so your overall effect is growth.

When pregnant the cycle  is more like this... "make hair ->make hair -> rest......" and then when your hormones crash, all your hairs are ready to enter the "fall out" phase, all at once!  The normal process eventually resets, but it's unfortunate that it all happens at once.
  • @DobbysSock I hear you on that eyelid zit. I actually thought I had scratched my cornea during the night or something when I got my first, a few weeks ago. It hurt and caused headaches for at least a week....WTF?
