July 2016 Moms

Gestational diabetes.... Again.

So this is my second pregnancy. First pregnancy was diagnosed with GD around 28 weeks which came as a shocker since I didn't gain much weight and not heavy to begin with. So this pregnancy they tested be at 10 weeks and my glucose came back high. I have to go for the 3 hour on Friday. Pretty confident I'm going to fail. I tested my sugar this morning after a bowl of Raisin Bran and it was 226. Mornings seem to always give me sky high numbers after breakfast. Just looking for any other moms in the same boat. Feeling defeated here and I still have 27 weeks to go.

Just wanted to throw this out there GD has nothing to do with being overweight or the amount of weight you gain during pregnancy.

Eta: check out the glucose test thread many women there are testing right now like you and some have been through it before that would be a good place to find some support.

  • I am in the same boat. Pregnancy #2 with GD but I am an insulin resistant PCOSer when not pregnant. First pregnancy, I was diagnosed and put on insulin at 10w; this time around I was put on insulin literally at 4w3d.

My OB recommended raisin bran when I complained of slow bowel function but even with insulin and eating a small portion the carbs in that cereal and the raisins do nothing but keep my sugar elevated. Eggs with cheese and a slice of whole wheat toast tends to be the most BS friendly breakfast thus far. Plus I need the protein since a lot of meats are on my aversion list.

Mornings were usually my toughest to manage levels because my body tends to go through the "dawn phenomenon" but since entering the second trimester, I feel post lunch and dinner are tough. I tend to linger above 120 two hours post meal so I am trying to limit carbs and keep those #'s tight.

GD is not a bowl of cherries but it is manageable and with numbers like 226 after a meal, its better to get on insulin sooner rather than later. Out of control sugars are problematic to both you and the baby.
  • The sugar content in Raisin Bran, and most sweetened cereals, is extremely high.  Like PP said, with numbers such as yours you should absolutely be changing your diet.

  • I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes several years ago. It's always been well-maintained but my levels during this pregnancy have been consistently high. Frustrating when all I want to do is eat the entire world. I'm on Metformin twice a day and insulin at bedtime.
  • I originally joined this bmb but have since traveled to August...
I had gd with my first pregnancy diagnosed around 27 weeks at my first prenatal appt with this pregnancy my dr said she saw no reason to screen me early for gd this pregnancy.
Wondering what other situations are? Should I be getting checked already?

Just wait until your dr reccomends testing. They check your glucose right away at your first appointment and if that looked pretty good they will probably have you wait :) you are not guaranteed to have it in a second pregnancy which is great!

  • @Lindsayleigh1989 it's funny that you said that they check your glucose in the beginning of the pregnancy. I just looked at my test results and I was in the normal low range for the test. I think that I need to start going to some fluffy doctors because I think she is basing this all on my weight.

  • @BeachTigress that happened to me last time, I had a doctor assume that I had GD without even looking that I passed with flying colours. I know it was all based on my weight!
