To go or not to go

So, I am debating going into the hospital and need some opinions. I'm not having contractions, it's just that I feel "off." I have been really light headed since yesterday and have started throwing up and feeling really nauseous.

My issue is that it doesn't sound like anything that can't be explained away as normal pregnancy stuff, but I still just feel weird. I have my regular appt. tomorrow at 2:00, so do I wait for that or bite the bullet and go in to L&D just to be checked out even knowing it could be a giant waste of time

Re: To go or not to go

  • I felt off yesterday and lightheaded but I felt better after eating and relaxing. Is throwing up common for you? my advice would be to call your doctor's after hours line and see if they want you to go in today to L&D.

  • If you are unsure, why not call and speak with a L&D nurse and get their opinion?
  • I agree with the PPs, if I feel something odd I call the L&D triage number and they've always been very helpful. If they think you need to go in they will tell you!
  • Give a call for sure, in my experience they don't mind pregnant ladies coming in to be sure. If the vomiting is unusual or really frequent make sure you're staying on top of your liquids and maybe get some gatorade to help with electrolytes.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Any time I called L&D in the past with my first two pregnancies I got this response "well unfortunately we cannot TELL you anything, you get to CHOOSE if you think it's worth coming in or not. We can however tell you the wait time is anywhere between 2-4 hours right now..." I was always so pissed. So I'm calling for serious medical advice/help but you really say nothing about anything? I have to come there, wait up to 4 hours, and possibly have a dr tell me I'll be ok drink some water? Thanks! And another time the lady deliberately interrupted me before I even got my first sentence finished and said "just come on we have to check you, we can't see you over the phone!"....yea ok thanks you cranky crow! You're supposed to be helpful and reassuring or at least calming i would hope but nope! I'll see you soon! Ugh! Sorry for the rant ladies! Lol
  • @xxarlannaxx I call my dr's answering service instead of L&D and she has always given me an answer over the phone. I wonder if I'm supposed to be calling L&D instead.

As a ER nurse myself I can tell you it's against the law in most places to give medical advice over the phone, that being said the whole 2-4 hr part is bull! If you went in with a legitimate problem they would not make you wait that long to see if you and/or your baby is ok! They probably say that bc they are being lazy or try to deter ppl from going in. That's pretty unprofessional of the nurse to say that to a worried mom to be. I would just go in to get checked if your worried it will be reassuring at least, and if anything funny is going on they can catch it early.
  • It's so interesting how everyone has a different protocol. If I was worried about anything during this pregnancy I just showed up at triage, without calling anyone ahead, and they saw me within minutes. If everything was fine I was on my way within 30 minutes. It sounds like some have to call their OBGYN office, others L&D, and some ER. I can't believe some gave to wait hours on end before even being seen.

I am also told to call my Drs office line/nurses line. If it's off hours an on-call Dr will call you back.
  • I had a very similar just didn't feel right day. Went to labor and delivery to find out I had preeclampsia. Sometimes you just know when somethings not right!

If that was the case I'd be in L&D everyday. (Minus the vomiting) if i were vomiting too much, I'd go in too. I'm glad everything was ok for you. Hope you're feeling better.
