Doulas!

I'm 6 months pregnant and this weekend a long time family friend offered that I contact her daughter who is becoming a certified doula. Other than googling what a doula is and does, does anyone have any positive or negative experiences, suggested questions I should ask her, or what to expect if I do select a doula in labor with me? I'm curious because so far I've read really positive things

    I did not have a doula with my first, but wish I had after learning more and more about them since then. I only have dh in the room with me, so to have someone who knows what's going on and can advocate for me sounds like a win win. I tossed this idea out to dh for this pregnancy and he didn't sound too excited....

    I hired a doula for my first and am doing so again this time! We really build a trusting relationship that helped me so much. I'd inquire about how much she'd be willing to be in touch/meet with you before and after the birth -- I loved the support in the moment, but it was also very nice to have someone who checked in on me a few weeks post partum and was available for me to text as needed. I remember sending her a pic of my sons cord stump to get her opinion on whether it was normal! :)

    We had one for our first labor/delivery and have hired one for this one. With our first, she was indispensable. She helped me remember relaxation techniques to get through contractions in the beginning, and then used hip compressions to ease the pain when relaxing no longer worked. She even ended up catching DD, since there wasn't any hospital staff in the room when she was born. The nurse checked me, told me I was fully dilated, then left the room without another word.
