SPD?

Anyone here been diagnosed with SPD or pelvic girdle pain?

Over the last 2 months, the pain has gotten to where it's almost unbearable. I can't sit, stand, walk, or turn over in bed without pain. I went to the grocery store and when I got to the door it was almost too hard to walk (thank goodness I grabbed a cart to lean on and go slowly!) I see a Chiro every week who agrees that this is probably what I have based on the types of asjustments she has to do. I wear a belly band, and sit as often as one can with a 3 year old!

Anyway, any suggestions/tips/advice? I have my OB appointment on Tuesday and will be going over this all with her then too.

Re: SPD?

  • Unfortunately there is basically nothing to help with SPD...the only cure is giving birth. With my last two pregnancies, the pain went away as soon as the baby was born. Mine seems to be so much worse this time around, especially since it started much earlier (at 16 weeks!), but when I've mentioned it to me doctor he just said hang in there! The belly belts and chiro help slightly for a little bit, but there really isn't anything you can do to take it away.

  • I have been definitely feeling the pains of this as well. Only thing that seems to help is when I remember to do pelvic tilt exercises and taking Tylenol. It really sucks that the doctors seem to have no real cure for it and we just have to live through it though.

  • I've been feeling SPD type pain for a month or so. I'm very thankful that my experience is mild compared to most that have mentioned it here. For the first couple weeks I was absolutely miserable, crying, could barely walk. As soon as I made adjustments - sitting down to put on shoes/pants, no more carrying my 3 year old:(, no more crossing my legs, using a birthing ball as a chair instead of our hard kitchen chairs, no more shaving while standing on one foot - I've had considerable relief. I have also found that much of the time, while standing, I naturally stand with 90% of my weight on one foot and kind of cross the other, which was contributing so much. Anyway, I'm headed to chiro tomorrow but I am honestly shocked at how much better it is since I started being 100% aware of activities that put pressure on only one side. I'm sure that you're already in those habits, but maybe it will help someone else reading!

  • I thought I had SPD at 22 weeks and my doctor wrote it off, now I have to get an ultrasound for groin swelling. I think the pelvic/groin area is just very sensitive with pregnancy, there's a lot of weight being beared down on it. But what PP's have said, even if they diagnose you with something in particular, it most likely won't stop til birth. It sucks. I've had such a relatively easy pregnancy and the pain is unimaginable at times. I'm ready for her to be out so it will go away and I can't imagine the pain getting any worse!

And as far as pain relief... Nothing helps me. I have a support belt, doesn't do anything. Hot showers will give me slight relief. It's mainly avoiding the things that aggravate it: standing for long periods of time (but I'm a server so it's tricky) and not making any big, fast movements when I go from sitting to standing.

  • Like @MississippiCatfish once I made adjustments to how I move everyday the pain became bearable. My physiotherapist suggested getting dressed and putting on shoes while sitting (no standing on one foot), avoid pushing a cart or stroller (something about swinging arms while walking helps), don't cross legs, and enter and exit the car like you are wearing a skirt and no underwear (legs together and swing in and out).

  • Thanks for the responses! I'm already doing pretty much all of the above, so I'm just going to continue (and the showers are definitely the most helpful!) Much appreciated, and I'm so sorry others are going through this also! I had zero pain with DS1 like this. This time? Possible stomach ulcer, this, and all the other lovely pregnancy stuff. It's so much fun... :p

I didn't really have it with my first two either.  It's so strange how different each pregnancy can be.  Best of luck and hope you find some relief!

  • I was FINALLY able to get an answer to my pain, which ended up being varicose veins in my left groin!  It seems that most of these conditions (SPD, PGP, varicose veins) don't really show up until later pregnancies.  Guess I'm the lucky one that got it in my first lol.  I'm just happy the symptoms basically go away right after birth.

  • I have to go to the grocery store tonight after work. As of right now, I can barely walk. Would it be wrong of me to use a motorized cart?

I won't lie: I really thought hard about whether or not I could do it. I don't think anyone would say anything to me, but I opted to go slow and just move how I could vs the stares I knew I'd get. But, I'm a pansy and care entirely too much about what others think of me, ha!

I had to sit down in the middle of Target yesterday because it hurt so bad.

I did this at the grocery store today! Lol.  I was sitting on the little rails that cover the cold foods... no shame.

  • @RissKay I did ride that motorized cart! I felt like an idiot and was worried that, even though there were 5 left at the door I went in, that someone else wasn't going to get one because of me. I had to keep reminding myself that I'm in pain when I walk and there's no place to sit down when my heart inevitably starts racing and I lose my breath. I had an older gentleman ask me to race him, then asked me on a date twice. It was amusing.

  • I hunched over my cart in the art aisle at Walmart the other day and choked back tears because of the pain. Now hubby is in charge of shopping so I don't have to. He said I should get a riding cart but I'm too scared of people's looks... Dumb I know

I didn't get a single dumb look if that makes you feel any better.

It does make me feel a little better but I'm also overweight and not everyone can tell I'm pregnant when I'm sitting lol
  • I recommend getting a prenatal massage. I'm 36 weeks and just had one today and I feel sooo much better. Plus they can realign your hips before the baby comes.
  • @DrillSergeantCat I'm so glad it wasn't a negative experience. I will probably be brave enough to try it next time!!

  • @RissKay I used one again at Walmart yesterday. Not a single f*** was given this time.
