Crib bedding and decorations

So, I love all the beautiful custom-made crib sets and related decorations.  However, the accountant side of me says how is that practical?  How is spending $400 on custom-made crib bedding that can be used for such a short-time.  Even if you say, you can reuse for second baby, how likely are the bumpers/sheets/etc likely going to be in good shape (ie not stained) after a newborn?

But then it just seems so boring to just get basic stuff.  Just regular sheets, etc.  Same thing on the decorations, seems like such a waste to go buy all these decorations, that your kids may not even like or aren't practical (like those cool puff things people hang in the corners).

I know it's still early to be buying stuff, but what are you ladies thinking of doing?  I'm almost leaning towards not doing a real theme, just getting regular ole stuff.

Re: Crib bedding and decorations

  • All the SIDs prevention information says no to crib bumpers and excessive bedding, so I'll plan to stick with a plain sheet and spend my money elsewhere.

  • We're also going to keep it simple and just get a crib, mattress, and sheet. We're doing a "theme" in terms of clothing/bedding/etc design, but we're not going to go all out and decorate the nursery - the money will be better spent elsewhere! Heck, we might even reuse the plastic dresser I have from college for baby's clothes (at least at first).

Mind you, we're also very practical people and we don't like clutter, so this is what works for us.
  • Carousel Designs (www.babybedding.com) has hundreds of beautiful patterns and fabrics that aren't "themey." I purchased several coordinating items from them for DD's nursery.  Excellent quality, looks like custom, and doesn't cost an arm and leg.

Carousel is one of the sites I love. Just not sure I can justify the costs of the "themes". I would love to, it just seems wasteful.
