  My husband had an experience similar to this. We both came down with terrible coughs and after a while his side would hurt so bad when he coughed he swore he cracked a rib. Sneezing would double him over in pain. When I finally convinced him to talk to a doctor they told him it was intercostal muscle strain. It took a few months to heal completely so it was a rough recovery with lots of pain meds and muscle relaxers. Definitely worth mentioning to your doctor if you're in that much pain! And whatever is the matter, I wish you a speedy recovery. We're uncomfortable enough without anything extra being thrown into the mix!

  Same thing happened to me while I was sick. My bil lives with us while he's in residency for physical medicine and rehab. He told me the same as above : muscle strain. I found that I had to apply pressure to my ribs with every cough to minimize the pain. It really helped.

  I have the same thing it's so painful. Heating pad works wonders!! I was almost In tears last night because my ribs hurt so bad but today's much better! Hope that helps you!
