Gallbladder issues

Anyone ever had problems with their Gall bladder while pregnant or otherwise? I woke in the middle of the night last night in pretty severe pain. It was in my upper abdomen just under my rib cage. After a while I got sick and just kept vomiting over and over. I tried to take a bite of something and drink some water and immediately started puking again. This whole time I had the cold sweats. I've already googled this and the most common thing that is coming up is Galls stones. Once I was finally able to control my heaving I went to my bed and curled up in a ball and fell back asleep. I woke up with no pain and no appetite. I go to the doctor on Tuesday ad will obviously speak to her about it. I just wanted to know if anyone else had experience with this.

Re: Gallbladder issues

  • Not while pregnant but I had attacks like that the year after dd was born. I finally had one bad enough u had a fever, vomiting, and pain that it felt like someone stabbed a knife through my back on the right side through to my chest/stomach. I went to the er and they removed my gull bladder the next day. Btw you can still get gull stones without a gull bladder apparently, I've had that happen since getting it removed.

  • I wish I could help, but unfortunately I've never had that kind of pain. Just wanted to send you well wishes and a speedy recovery. If it persists, I would think about going to the ER--your pain sounds severe. <3

I seriously considered it last night. My H was out fishing so I would have had to either take my kids with me or call someone to some sit with them so my options were a little limited. But I spoke to MIL about it and she said don't hesitate if it happens again. She will be here and FIL will take me.

I would even say it was almost as bad as labor pains before hitting transition.

    Edited for spelling.

  • I found out I had gallstones when I was 6 weeks pregnant with my 3rd. After an ultrasound and talking with my doctor we decided to wait till after I had her to get my gallbladder removed. He said that he would only removed in 2nd trimester if the pain was really bad. I just watched what I ate cause certain things set it off. I had my daughter in August and got my gallbladder removed in October.
  • I had problems with mine throughout my entire first pregnancy. Three weeks after I had DD they and to take it out. I was SO sick my entire pregnancy and lived off zofran. Praying you start to feel better soon!
  • I was diagnosed with gallstones with my first pregnancy (though I started having attacks much earlier than pregnancy, my doctor never linked my pain with my gallbladder). I should have had it taken out after I gave birth, but never did because I had to go back to work so quickly.

I will have it out after this pregnancy because the attacks are awful. I'm having to medicate through them (with meds from my OB). But so long as there is no fever, he wants me to wait for surgery.
  • I had my gall bladder out about 12 years ago and the pain from the attacks was AWFUL! They also didn't mention at the time that I could still make more gall stones (which I've since found out) and I will randomly have the pain still. Mine feels like it starts up in the middle by the breast bone and wraps around my rib cage in to the back. It happens worst either after meals or in the middle of the night. For some reason I've found sitting up in a hunched over position and burping constantly (didn't find out I could make myself burp until all this) relieves pressure or something and eases it back up.

When I went in for the initial attacks though they swore up and down it couldn't be my gall bladder because I wasn't jaundice. My dad insisted on a scan, which showed some stones and they took it out a few days later. After they took it out they said it was so highly inflamed that they thought it could have ruptured. So be aware if you go in to the ED, they might try to blow you off, especially because you are pregnant. To check for stones they just do an ultrasound, so insist on one.

Also, avoid carbonation and fatty/greasy foods. Hope you feel better!!
  • I had mine out last year. I would have small attacks that felt like really bad gas bubble on my right side. It would last for about 20 mins. I could barely sit still while having them. Then in the middle of the night I had a really bad attack that lasted several hours. I woke my DH and my little one and took me to the ER. It was my gallbladder. It was full of stones. He wanted me to have it removed right then. So went in for emergency surgery that day and had it taken out. He said if I waited I would have another one. I did not want to have that kinda pain again. I would definitely go to the doctor ASAP. If they won't take it out cause of being pregnant, they could tell you what to stay away from to keep the attacks at bay. Good luck! They are awful. You are a trooper for sticking through that without going to the ER.

  • I'm going to ask my OB to order an ultrasound to look into it farther. If she won't/can't I'll call my primary doctor and have her do it. My MIL is an RN and we talked. She had me go online and look into a gallstone diet and it looks like I will be staying away from fatty foods as much as possible to help prevent it. I read they will likely not want to do surgery while pregnant so I think tying to manage it is going to be my best bet. Thanks for all your info ladies. Hopefully I can keep the pain away but if it happens again I will be going straight to the ER.

  • I'm sorry you are having this problem while pregnant. I had my gallbladder removed about 6 years ago. And in typical me fashion, nothing showed up on any of the scans they did so my gastroenterologist had me try IBS medicine and diet for a while while still having stacks before he would do surgery. When they took it out I didn't have any stones (probably why nothing showed up on scans) but it was severely inflamed.
I hope you don't have anymore attacks and can get through this pregnancy before you really start to have severe issues.

  • @fishwife799 keeping my FX you have a better night! Hope the diet change helps quickly!
  • I had gallbladder attacks while still pregnant with my first. I thought it was Braxton-Hicks at first, but then it felt like you described. It got worse after he was born, and I had it removed when he was 7 weeks old.
Not eating cheese or fatty foods kept the artacks down. I sympathize with you--that pain is worse than labor (IMO) since it doesn't ebb away like contractions. Talk to your doctor and they'll give you what help you need. And I'd get it out after delivery, if you can.
  • Thank you. This has helped ease some of my worries
  • I don't have attacks like described, but I am pretty sure I have gallbladder issues. My mom and 2 aunts have had theirs removed. I throw up bile constantly while pregnant and semi constantly when I am not. I really wish I had looked into this before I got preggo again but will definitely be looking into it after this baby.
