So I feel guilty...

I just had (cold) deli meat for the second time since I found out I was pregnant. My mom said she had subs all the time when she was pregnant with me. I'm 10w4d and I really don't see a problem with it. Is the chance of getting listeria that real?? Why isn't deli meat dangerous when you're not pregnant?

  • You will be okay! You aren't the only one that has eaten deli meat (or some other forbidden pregnancy food). As long as you aren't eating it every day, all day long you and your baby will be okay.
  • If it looks good and smells good then eat it
  • I had salami and deli chicken this weekend too. My doc said not to be too worried about it.
  • I'm eating a turkey sandwich right now.
  • if you feel comfortable eating it and it's from a reputable deli then I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm a worrier so I'm staying clear of it but that's just me - some of my friends have done the same and others are cold cuts their entire pregnancy and were fine.
Also I do remember reading that the most recent listeria outbreaks weren't even from deli meat so there's that too
If you are going to feel guilty and upset then I would just forgo it for the duration. Either that or embrace it and eat away :)
  • The most recent listeria outbreaks were from fruits and veggies and ice cream and if your doctor tells you to avoid those you should find a new one. I've eaten cold cut sandwiches and cooked sushi and at 14 weeks the baby is still healthy as ever! Eat what you are comfortable eating but do your research too and make an educated decision for it.
  • @msuzannah ice cream?! Say it isn't so!

Yeah Blue Bell (Texas) shut down production for listeria and we were out of blue bell for months. It was depressing.
  • I eat cold deli meat like every day. I did during my first pregnancy too and my daughter is just fine. It it makes you feel bad then don't do it. But you're fine.
  • Yup, I'm still eating all the deli meat. Since you asked though, The problem with listeria is that it can cause miscarriages as it can enter through the placenta and cause baby harm as opposed to just a non pregnant person getting sick as shit. Eat good quality meat and make sure it's fresh and you'll be fine.
  • Damn, now I want more jimmy johns.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I'm a sucker for sandwiches.. Def have not given them up.. I don't eat them all the time but when I want too.. I do.
  • They say it because your body is more susceptible to reacting to listeria while pg. speak with your dr and make your own decision. I choose not to eat it unless it's heated up, but that's me (I'm super paranoid because I'm a pgal).

  • If you are worried, just heat the meat up first. I am being really cautious just because at 8 weeks I ate pretty rare steak and was sick for an entire week.
