Colicky Baby

Anyone experiencing colic in their LO yet? My LO has been crying most of the afternoon/evening and has barely been able to be stopped except when feeding. Tried the 5 S's, nothing works for more than a minute except feeding. Can't tell if this is colic or just a fussy newborn with an off schedule? LO is 2 weeks old. Pray for me that I can get more than 5 minutes of sleep tonight.

Re: Colicky Baby

  • What are the 5 s's? I'd LO burping ok?

  • I had a worry last week(dd was 3 weeks but born 2weeks early) that she had colic(I was a colic baby). She's actually improved this week. She's still fussy in the evenings(check out witching hour). Colic is usually content and not just the evenings. We also give her probiotics which seem to help with any upset tummy issues. Good luck mom!
  • Download the "Baby Got Colic" song on iTunes. My 4-year-old didn't have colic but it helped during the witching hour!

  • We have nights where she's colicky, and some where she's not. She's gone 3-4 of straight screaming before and nothing worked. Even the 5 Ss didn't stop it.
  • Not due until Jan, but the 6 month old I've nannied since she was 3 days old had awful colic. Nothing "cured" her colic or transformed her, but I did find some techniques that helped. She frequently had painful gas so burping her helped, but I had to burp her laying on her stomach across my knees because she couldn't seem to work it out if she was upright. She also was calmer with tons of skin to skin, so wearing her was beneficial. She needed constant motion so I would either walk or bounce while wearing or holding her. She also needed the perfect recipe to go down (swaddle, pacifier, sound machine, dark and quiet room) and trying to get her on a schedule helped some too.

I know how crazy it can drive a person, so don't feel bad if you need to put LO down and walk away to collect yourself. sometimes just 5 minutes of a mental escape helps to keep your sanity intact.
  • Lurking from March '16.. Have you looked into gas drops?  I love Mommy's Bliss gas drops, they helped my son with his gassy tummy and he still asks for it when he gets hiccups. Bicycling LOs legs is another helpful move with gas and then there is this sweet move..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3T-3RwrnQI

    Hope this helps a little..

This is me being cautious from experience but I'd have baby checked out. DS went from a happy baby to extremely fussy constantly around three weeks. He had diarrhea but was breastfed so that was expected and spit up which babies do. Turns out he has multiple protein intolerance and was fussy from pain and being so sick. Finding the right formula was the only thing that finally helped him.

ETA baby wearing can be a lifesaver. With both of my babies if I hit a point where I've tried everything else and they still won't calm down then I bring out the wrap and have them on my chest doing skin to skin. It sometimes takes a while for them to settle in but has almost always worked for me.
  • Are you breast feeding? Sometimes it could be something you are eating? With my last daughter I switched to almond milk but still had other dairy and it made a huge difference. That and gas drops. Good luck :)

  • Maybe I freaked too early. LO has been totally normal today. To those that asked, Yes I'm BFing, and that is going well. Only thing I can come up with is that he got formula fed for about half the day on Sunday so maybe that upset his tummy?

@RachDaRach I checked out that "Baby Got Colic" and I love it - definitely think it helps to calm him.

@kepoole the 5 S's are swaddle, suck, shush, side/stomach, and swing. Methods to calming babies.

Thanks for the help/support ladies, we'll see how the next few days go!

  • I've heard from my chiropractor that a baby may need an adjustment because of the teams of being born. Worth a shot
  • Late to the party, but wanted to share. My LO was very colicky when we were supplementing with formula (issues with BFing my first week home from hospital). With my pediatrician's blessing I tried Gerber Soothe for colic and Mylecon. Might be worth keeping it on hand just in case. Good luck!
  • @kepoole the 5S's come from "the happiest baby on the block" which was written by a peditrician about how to calm newborns.
