Dilated Kidneys

Hey Ladies , Two days I got a call from my nurse saying that they need to repeat an ultrasound on my Babygirl due to the Dr saying she probably has dilated kidney and we want to make sure if she is correct or not Monday I go in. How many moms went thru this with their unborn child and everything turn out fine I still don't know but it just when they told me it got me worry :( will just have to wait.

Re: Dilated Kidneys

  • I was told the same thing at my 20 week ultrasound but I have to wait until I'm 32 weeks to get another ultrasound to check on it. They told me that most often it resolves itself and if it doesn't they will check him after birth with an ultrasound on his kidneys. They told me it is most likely something called hydronephrosis and Obviously hearing something like that, I called my mom panicked and she told me I actually had the same thing when I was a baby, it took them so long to figure out why I kept getting bladder infections, but I eventually out-grew it, and I still don't really understand. all I know is that my baby has the same thing and hopefully it clears up, but if not, it's something that can be monitored and is not detrimental by any means to the overall well-being of my baby.

  • I was told the same thing. Without any other markers, it's usually something that can be monitored, or if more serious, corrected with surgery. Personally, I had another marker (brain cysts) that are also not cause for concern unless combined with another factor. The MFM doctor wasn't concerned, as it turns out the kidneys were really just on the high side of normal. I did the genetic blood test and got the all clear, and I go in for another scan in a few weeks to make sure things still look ok. Did they tell you the exact measurements?

I'd try not to worry too much. It's important to remember that OBs have the highest rates of malpractice insurance. They are extra extra cautious when it comes to these kinds of things. It's good that they are careful, but it also can cause a lot of anxiety! Try not to worry too much, though!

My baby boy was also found to have mild hydronephrosis in one kidney at 23w. It's a soft marker for Down's, but our Panorana test was negative. It is very common and tends to resolve by itself when in isolation, especially in boys. My doctor wasn't worried but said we will re-check in the third tri.
