Tummy time help!

My son is 15 weeks old and hates tummy time! He has silent reflux and our doctor did say they are more likely to dislike tummy time. He will go for a couple minutes but then gets really mad and starts crying! We try using the boppy and that helps, have also tried laying down and talking with him and different toys and mats but nothing seems to help. I really worry we don't do it enough and that he will get a flat head! Any tips?!

Re: Tummy time help!

  • DD does better with a mirror or an open book in front of her.

  • DD will sometimes cry when I first put her down for tummy time but if I wait it out for a minute she will settle and start playing.
  • Ditto the mirror. It really helps us. DD got a water mat from Santa that I can't wait to try. Maybe something for LO to do while on his tummy could help.

  • My lo hates it but loves being held upright like over the shoulder and she does her "tummy time" like that. It's better than nothing and we still try to do some floor time as well but she usually starts screaming

  • Lay on your back and airplane! I do this for half an hour every day and he loves it. I do push ups, dip him side to side, lay him on my tummy and sit up to kiss his face, and lay him on my shins and move my legs out and forward, and this is my workout for the day lol.
  • If your son lasts a few minutes, that's actually pretty great! I would try to have him do it several times a day, before he eats to accommodate his reflux. You will notice a tremendous difference in just a week or so, I assure you! And tummy time is one of those things that the more you do it, the less torture it becomes!
  • Just want to say- you're not alone. My guy is 18 weeks and screams bloody murder the second we attempt to put him on his tummy. All we can do is put him on our chests/ stomachs and try it that way with some success. He's been trying to sit up the past few days- so that's good I guess but I'm a failure at tummy time.
  • Does your baby roll onto his belly yet? My baby hated tummy time too but just discovered rolling three days ago. Now I can't put him down on his back without him immediately rolling over onto his tummy. The funny thing is he does it intentionally but then gets mad that he's on his belly! So now I don't feel so bad about neglecting tummy time in the past because he's doing it himself now. And babies don't necessarily get flat heads from lack of tummy time. If you're wearing him or holding him or have him propped up that would help prevent flat head as well. I think that flat spots happen when babies spend too much time in a car seat or sleeper where they can't move their heads. That being said, tummy time is very important for developing certain skills and muscles but many of us forget to do it often and I think our babies are fine.
