Husband teaches kids in our home. Concerned about risks of exposure.

My husband teaches piano in our home. It is our bread and butter, so we can't delay him teaching.
I'm concerned that we may get kids in the house that aren't vaccinated. I plan on speaking to our doctor about how much isolation we need to strive for, but do you think it would be poor customer service to post something on the door along the lines of, "There is a newborn in this home. If you have chosen not to vaccinate your child, please notify us immediately in order to take appropriate precautions to avoid exposure."?

  • You mainly have to be careful with wording.
  • I agree with PP that a sign on a door seems silly, but its better to send home a note to parents that if kids are sick or running a fever to reschedule the class. I'd think that goes without saying and should be your policy regardless if you have a newborn or not but I don't know how you run your business, if you have contracts, etc.
  • I wouldn't be as worried about the non vaccination as much as the sick as PP have said. Just because you don't want sick children touching all the surfaces of your house. But you also can keep the baby away from them and I doubt they'd be touching the baby anyway which will eliminate vaccination risk.
  • I would keep the baby away. If you send a letter home that changes the contract in anyway you should not expect to be paid if a child has to miss a lesson. I don't know where you live but I am in NY and a lot of children just have a cough or runny nose for weeks, and if I was told my child could not come I would not be paying. If this is concern I would keep the children being taught to the piano room until baby is vaccinated and if a child has something clean off all surfaces.

  • Unless the baby is in close contact with the children, it is unlikely they will catch anything. Have DH wash his hands and wipe down the piano between lessons so he doesn't catch anything and I think you will be fine.
  • I'm gonna be the b**** that says if your kid isn't vaccinated, they need to seek lessons elsewhere until LO has had all of their vaccines. But then again I'm overly paranoid about vaccines for personal reasons so I'm probably harsher than you should be. I don't know, you need the lessons for money, to keep LO safe and healthy, but then inviting unvaccinated kids into your home isn't safe/healthy so it's really a catch 22. Just remember that lots of the diseases we vaccinate got have long incubation periods, so a kid could be contagious for weeks before they show any symptoms- asking kids with symptoms to stay away wouldn't catch something like pertussis if the kid had weekly lessons. You'll just have to be super vigilant about cleaning after every visit.
  • Move the piano to the room closest to the front door, if possible and keep the baby away from visitors.
The baby's immune system stays immature till 3 yo and if you breastfeed they get your antibodies.
You can get a special devise, that disinfects the air with ultraviolet light. I've never used one, but know they exist and wipe surfaces with disinfecting wipes.
There is no need to keep unvaccinated kids away - you will loose a lot of clients, just ask sick kids to miss the lesson
