Infertility

Blighted ovum/D&C

Unfortunately, our November BFP isn't looking so positive anymore. Our doctor hasn't been able to find an embryo within the gestational sac, and my sac is measuring behind. I've already had two ultrasounds, and the third one is next Saturday to give the final diagnoses and plan if I don't miscarry on my own.

I have literally never been so terrified in my life. I shake even before my follicle measuring ultrasounds, I can't imagine what the D&C will do to me. I'm so emotionally drained after my second miscarriage within the past 6 months, this is really going to kill me.
Does anyone have experience with D&C's? What should I prepare myself for?

  • I'm so sorry u are going through this. I have had a D&C before and waking up from it wasn't a plesant experience. They do put u to sleep but I was in a lit of pain afterwards. They kept me in the hospital for a day and pumped me with pain meds. You are going to need plenty of rest afterwards and to do as little as possible. I was rather week after mine. I don't wish this on anyone...my last pregnancy was a blighted ovum and I decided to miscarry on my own. I wouldn't do that again...that was way worse and more painful than the D&C.

  • Thanks @ShayLatrice for explaining it to me. I was really contenating on whether or not I should wait to miscarry. Should I take time off of work if I have the procedure done, in your opinion?

  • I would definitely take some time off afterwards. Your body may be weaker than you expect. Losing a pregnancy is really not easy on the body at all... it's like  having all the pains of labor and it sucks because at the end there is no baby. For me though it was physically painful... it was more emotional and I needed time of just to manage my emotions.

Personally, I would wait to miscarry naturally. Is there a specific reason your doctor has recommended a D&C? How far along are you? I have miscarried naturally (passed the tissue) on my own with both of my m/c's. One m/c was 5w1d and another at 6w6d.

  • @_Amanda_ he hasn't really given me any specific recommendations yet. I'm assuming tomorrow will be the day for that at my ultrasound. I'm here wondering what everyone else's thoughts are on the issue. Thanks for your input. I have a lot to think about..and a big decision to make. How was the pain level from your miscarriage?

the pain level was very very low. I was armed with narcotics, because I was so afraid of the pain. But, after an hour (and passing the tissue - TMI - one large chuck), I was perfectly fine. I know the pain level can increase if you're further a long in your pregnancy. :(
