Hand Sanitizer and Other Smell Goods

I use Purell Hand Sanitizer every day, because of my field of work. I use it countless times a day, even if I have a cut on my finger, I use it. I figure it's better to stay clean and sanitized, as my fingers near my mouth, nose or eyes. I am a clean freak. I am 28 weeks today, and I heard that using Hand Sanitizer is bad for the baby.. Has anyone else heard this before? Or am I being too obsessive? Is this just another "myth?"

ALSO

Wallflower Bath and Body Work plug ins.. I have them all throughout our house. Any negatives on using them while pregnant?

Re: Hand Sanitizer and Other Smell Goods

  • I don't think there would be any issues with using them. I would think that if there actually was a risk, they would be forced to put it on the label.

  • I've never heard anything about Bath and Body Works wall flowers..but I refuse to use them. I had one plugged in by a piece of furniture, DH took it out and laid it down on the wood..came back the next day to plug it back in and it removed all the stain where the oil had spilled. It made me wonder about other places that I had them plugged in at so I went and checked the one in my bathroom below my medicine cabinet..the oil had etched the mirror! I was so mad! I looked it up and its a huge complaint, there is actually a website dedicated to it. I took back all the new oils I had just purchased and explained it to the customer service gal and she wasn't surprised and mentioned they get a return like mine at least once a week.

Fast forward a couple weeks later and I had a pair of their infused socks on my dresser and when I picked them up they had lifted part of the stain on the dresser..never again.

  • I don't think its a baby specific issue but I'm also in the camp that uses hand sanitizer extremely sparingly. I'm a firm believer in old fashioned soap and water and the benefits of building natural immunity to dirt, etc.

as for the oils I would encourage you to do a little reading and googling. I'm pretty horrified by what I've been reading about scented candles, etc. and have been transitioning to natural essential oils and things that aren't chemical based. My general feeling after DD1 was that yes, babies are slightly more sensitive but really if something is giving me that much pause we probably shouldn't be using it for the rest of the family either.
