Gel manicures

Has anyone talked to their doctor about gel manicures? Most things online say they're fine but there those few that say it can be harmful. I just got one this afternoon not thinking until DH asked me if it was okay. I was like ummmmmm I think so. Thoughts?

Re: Gel manicures

  • I have done gel since finding out and didn't blink an eye. I'm not a professional but have a hard time seeing how nail polish is going to absorb in and affect our embryos. I put this in the same category as hair dye, which my Mayo clinic book says is fine.

  • I honestly don't really care. There are so many things that pregnant women "aren't supposed to do" that my bi weekly manicures will not stop!
  • I vote it's fine! I dye my hair too - all research I've read has no significant affect.
  • I don't get them even when not pregnant. I was told the UV light carries some risk of cancer. I already am high risk so I skip those. And I heard you have to keep it up or it ruins the nails like wraps.
They look beautiful and I love some of those designs.

  • I think finding a well ventilated clean salon is more important.

  • I just did my gel mani at home, but it uses LED which has very minimal UV. But I can't imagine it being a problem. My stuff is 5-free, but idk if that matters when talking about pregnancy. I just like it bc it doesn't stink. Lol I use nail wraps too, but I remove them with oil so that process should also not be a problem (along with not damaging my nails).
  • I just did it the other day and they soaked my hand in nail polish remover... Usually the place I go too doesn't do that... So I may go back to my reg place... As for hair dye... Doing it next week...

  • I think that this goes along with some foods - live your life. If you're concerned about it, there are 5free gel polishes and sets so you can do it yourself at home, or take somewhere to have them apply.

Also agree with @ThisisNumber3 - I'd be more concerned about finding a place that's clean and well ventilated.

  • I got gel tips my entire pregnancy with #1.  I don't get them anymore, but DD turned out perfectly fine
