Red rash around eye

Ideas on what this could be? Just the other day my 4 month old started rubbing his eye and now he's doing it much more frequently and if facing in he'll rub his eye on my shirt. It started just his eye and now it seems to be red down his cheek. It's kind of hard to tell in the pictures. You can see he has scratched himself from rubbing it :-(

But I was just thinking the other day how easy it would be for baby to get pink eye. You change a poop, touch his face before you wash your hands, or baby gets all flaily on the changing table...Would be so easy.
Other thoughts, maybe he scratched his eye. I have scratched my eye and it gets really red and itchy. Heals quickly, nothing you can do about it.
