Prenatal Vitamins

Hi ladies - I was just told yesterday to make sure my prenatal vitamins contain DHA.  Of course, when I went home and checked, DHA was not listed on the bottle.  I'm currently using the Target Up & Up brand.  I have quite a bit left so I just purchased a DHA supplement for right now.  But does anyone have a recommended brand of prenatal vitamins with DHA they are currently using?

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • I think *most* prenatals don't have DHA. I think most ladies take a seperate pill.

  • I'm on a prescription prenatal + DHA now, per my OB, but I used to take Naturemade brand and those have DHA. You can find them most places, but if you have a Costco membership you can get a giant bottle for cheap.

  • I take the Sundown No Burp fish oil and they work fine for me. I didn't know about the DHA need either when I bought my prenatals - next bottle I buy will include it so I don't have to take two pills!
  • Thanks for your help!  I never thought to look at Costco/Sam's.
  • I take vita fusion prenatal gummies - they have DHA. Unfortunately, no iron, so I take an iron tablet separately.
  • I take the target up & up brand that also has DHA in it (just one pill though). It's about $15 for a 30 pill bottle. I like it because it's vegan DHA, unlike most which are fish oil.

  • I use OneADay Prenatal that contains DHA. It is kind of expensive though. It's just one pull. I used it with my first pregnancy and it just agreed with me well so I continued. Also, I think (it's been a while since I remember exactly) that I read about all the different values of things you should look for in a prenatal in What to Expect, and the OneADay had them all.

OH BUDDY. Prenatal Vitamins. It took me and my OB about a million years (or an afternoon) to find a prenatal vitamin that didn't contain Iodine (highly allergic). Now that you talk about the DHA, I realize that mine don't. Guess I'll start taking those too... -_-

  • @Tnallen107   When I was looking for DHA supplements, I found 2 kinds.  One was 400 mg and was away from the prenatal section, and the other was 200 mg and in the prenatal section.  They also had "prenatal health" written on the bottle.  I chose those obviously.  They are also fish free...not sure if that makes a difference or not.  Just letting you know so you are aware there are a few choices out there!

I never noticed mine don't have iron... Guess I need to look into that. Glad you mentioned it!

  • I was taking the regular NatureMade, but this week I was at Costco and saw the NatureMade DHA version and got those. I like that they are a gel cap, kind of hate the large size though.
  • I've been taking NatureMade. Also, I realized when looking on the back of the containers, that they contain different amounts of DHA. Some vitamins you have to take 2 of to get the requirements in, some contain enough in just 1 pill.

  • Our Costco has a giant bottle for like 18 bucks. Not home so I can't remember the name but it does have DHA. And 150 pills.
  • How do you all take your vitamins? I have been struggling this pregnancy since I gag at even the thought of taking them. I am so sick =( Any tips?

  • My vitamin doesn't have any DHA. When I asked my doc if I should add omega supplement she said not to worry about it. Anyone else think that is weird?
  • @Tnallen107 Did you happen to consider Prenate DHA? I don't believe it has iodine and has lots of good stuff in it! Check with your insurance though because it can be pricey. But they have a coupon on their website good for 12 refills.

  • I take a regular prenatal and then a fish oil supplement (both generic grocery store - Wegmans - brand). Don't know the exact amount of DHA in them, but presumably enough. I'm going to run it by the nurse at my next appointment.
  • I'm taking the NatureMade Prenatal vitamin and a separate DHA supplement (Nordic Naturals DHA) -- I went that route because of the Amazon.com reviews.

My OB also said that the DHA was optional (she said, "Okay, you want your baby to be a genius, so go ahead and take it.") A lot of people get all the DHA they need through diet, apparently. (I don't eat fish, though, so I figure I could use some help in the DHA department).

I take a gummy vitamin. Chewing helps me keep it down whereas I throw up the pills.

  • @mermaidbina I was having A LOT of trouble once morning sickness set in. My OB told me to take B6 and since then, I have been able to stomach my prenatals. I do try to take them with food as well.
