Early Pregnancy. Extreme Bloat!

Hello Ladies!

I am currently 4 weeks and 5 days? pregnant. This will be my third pregnancy. I am 5'1" and before i found out I was pregnant I had a BMI of 27 which puts me in the overweight category.

So, this is my concern. I am SO bloated that I look much further along. I even had a stranger come up to me today and ask what I was having. I'm already wearing my maternity clothes from last pregnancy. I could try to suck in and it does make a little difference but it's very uncomfortable to do.

Is this normal with a third child and being a little overweight? Should I be concerned and get a hold of my Dr. on Monday? Thanks ladies!! Happy New Year!

Bloating is very normal in pregnancy, I don't think there's any reason to call your doctor. Wear what's comfortable, drink lots of water and limit sodium when possible!

Thank you! I've been trying to not intake too much sodium. I do need to work harder on drinking more water though.

  • It is normal and not a reason to call your Dr. Drink more water and increase your fiber.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I could have written this post. This is also my third pregnancy and HOLY BLOAT!!! I'm a small person and the smallest change is noticeable. We were wanting to keep this a secret until after the 8week scan but it's hard to hide!! Hello, baggy sweaters and scarves!!
  • @lalala2004 you never fail me on these threads!! Bloat is 100% normal. Like everyone has said eat low doofus foods and up your water intake. At 14 weeks my bloat had finally started to go away!
  • I was SO bloated week 4 going into 5. It's gone down since then (6w1d). My picture would have looked very similar to you. I would have to unbutton my jeans when I sat down. It has gone away for the time being.
  • @lalala2004 OMG!!!!!! I needed a good laugh, thanks!!!!!!

  • This is my first pregnancy -- I'm 5 weeks 4 days along and the bloat is insane. Since it's my first, I don't have any maternity clothes and I'm considering just going out and buying a pair of jeans in a size up -- I can fit into my jeans but the bloating makes wearing them uncomfortable and I don't like the idea of my jeans "squeezing" our appleseed.

I'm loading up on fiber, but so far it hasn't helped. I just need to keep reminding myself that the bloat is a good thing!

Google the rubber band trick, don't buy new pants.

  • Oh man, I could have written this post myself. I looked about 12 weeks along (or further) when I JUST found out I was pregnant. I'd keep up with the maternity clothes (so much more comfy) and increase water, and decrease salt. Sorry, dear!

  • I say go with the maternity clothes! So much more flattering since they are designed for the pregnant body shape. mumberry.com has awesome clothes with a built-in belly-support band (the "MumBand") that lifts some pressure off of your back and hips/pelvis. It also grows with the belly :)
  • @lalala2004 That was awesome.. now I really with I could poop lol.

  • I agree with @randimt16 ... Maternity clothes are more flattering, especially as your belly gets bigger. Wearing larger sizes of regular clothes might make you look overweight as opposed to pregnant. It did for me at least.
  • Im so glad I seen this post. To learn about the bloating is a huge weight off my shoulders. I am currently in week 9 with baby #2 and I look like im already 20 weeks. I feel huge already even though I have lost weight instead of gaining it. However I am over weight so losing some weight wont hurt the baby.
