How much BM to send....

My heart is so heavy and I'm so anxious and sad that after 11 weeks I have to return to work....it's possibly the hardest thing I've had to deal with....

Grandma will be watching LO 3 days a week...he is EBF, my question is how much BM should I send for his day? He's always been on the breast so I'm not even sure how much he's eating.

Adice welcomed.

  • I EP and my LO is 5 weeks old, she eats 3.5 ounces every 3 hours. Sometimes she only eats 2.5 or 3. Really just depends on how awake she is. Sometimes she can't stay awake during her bottle and has trouble finishing it.
  • I EP , lo is 6 weeks tomorrow and she eats 4 Oz every 2-3 hours ..and then sleeps through the night

  • Hahaha...sorry not bowel movement...thanks for the input....what bottles have you had success with? We've been trying to supplement him more by using a bottle instead of breast...it's hit or miss, I wasn't planni bf to go back for another 4 weeks but unfortunately I was called back early. So we're on a time crunch getting our LO prepared for the change.
  • I would try introducing bottles before you actually go back, to make sure you have ones that he will take, and so it is not a total shock on top of you going to work. Would dad be able to give LO 1 or 2 bottles before you go back to give you an idea how much is needed to each feeding.

It varies so much for each kid, my LO is 7.5 weeks but takes at minimum 6 oz a feed, and eats around 45-50 oz a day.

DS did great with Avent natural fit. DD so far prefers Dr Browns. It's really a matter of experimenting.

PS - I read this title as BM= Bowel movements and thought "well this should be interesting"

    Lol I did the same...
    Same here!
  • LO goes back n forth from the breast, to Avent, to Medela bottles with no problem! I agree with pp, try some out and see how it goes.
  • My daughter drank 4 bottles with 3 ounces in each. It was exactly what I pumped at work each day. During growth spurts she would drink an extra bottle. She never drank more than 4 ounces in a feeding, even at a year old.

It took her until the night I went back to work to take a bottle. It was very frustrating! I couldn't be in the house and she didn't want anyone touching her. She liked to sit in the rock n play and eat.
We just tried a bottle for the first time this week with my 5 week old. He wasn't super excited about it but took it.
  • As for bottles my DD liked the basic Medela bottles that came with my pump. We are using them again with DS.
  • I read that LCs recommend Tommie Tippie to be most like the breast so that's what we use. We love them!
  • DD likes playtex ventaire bottles when she drinks pumped milk. She takes them no problem... they're also the only ones we've tried so, I'm not sure what help this comment is lol.
  • I would try starting bottles now like PP have said so you can have an idea of how much he drinks & introduce him to bottles cuz it's hard for some LOs to adjust to bottles
  • My DD seems to drink from anything. I tried the medela bottles that came with my pump first, but the flow is a little fast and she's really gulp it down. We tried the playtex bottles with the plastic drop in this week (slow flow) and she took that fine as well. Still trying to figure out how much she eats as we have only given her 4 bottles in almost 8wks.
  • We tried the Tommie tippee, avent, and Como tomo, but they all had too fast of a flow, and he got bad gas with Tommie tippee. We ended up setting on chicco bottkes.
  • I would initially plan for 2 ounces of milk for every hour you're gone. So if you work 8 hours send 16 ounces. And have a small freezer stash ready in case they need more. That'll help you for day one. Then as long as you are pumping 2 to 3 times while you're at work and your body responds to the pump you should be able to send what you pump on day 1 at work with him on day 2. And just always have a freezer stash ready to be used for growth spurts.
  • Thanks for all the help we've tried Avent....he won't take it at all....I ordered Commo bottles...we'll try those tomorrow....2 oz. For every hour sounds good....I'm going to send all my milk stash to her. I've got about 24 oz. Stored....gives me 3 more days to pump like crazy.

Are you the one trying to feed him the bottles? Many babies won't take a bottle from their moms. Try leaving the house.
As I posted I had to be gone and my DD had to be in the rock n play or the car seat in order to take the bottle. She didn't want to associate it with nursing and didn't want to be touched.
Other babies need the smell of their moms and like a blanket that she's used to be wrapped around them.
Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error.
It's so frustrating! It took a month of trying every few days to get my DD to drink from a bottle.

Another option is syringe or spoon feeding if he absolutely won't take a bottle.

And let him play with the bottle with an ounce in there to get used to it. Try putting it in his mouth when he's not hungry.
Have the person watching him try the bottle before he is hungry because once he's frantic he likely won't take it.
  • 8 week old is taking 3.5 - 4 ounces every 3 hours so I send 3 refrigerated bottles and a couple frozen in case.

A lactation consultant can weigh him before and after nursing to help you get an idea of how much he's taking.
