Stressed out pup...

STMs I desperately need your help! Our baby was born on December 26th, and we came home on the 28th. We have a puppy who's just over a year old who is just a big baby. He has always had problems with anxiety, so we knew bringing home a baby would be a big adjustment for him. While we were in the hospital I sent my boyfriend home with blankets and clothes for him to smell and get used to the scent. But since we've been home, he's been having a very hard time. The first night he seemed fine but the second day he started having diarrhea nonstop, all the time. Along with throwing up here and there. You can see how much weight he has lost. Both my SO and I have been giving him special attention along with treats...but we're getting nowhere. Looking for any tips to help him calm down and adjust. This mama is exhausted and can only handle cleaning up so much poop..

Re: Stressed out pup...

  • Have you talked to his vet? Maybe they would have some good suggestions.

  • This is actually a really common stress reaction for dogs. Its happened to my dog a few times before. We've always stopped feeding him for a day or so, only give him water, also you can feed him canned plain pumpkin (NOT pie filling) that will help settle his stomach. Give him lots of attention and love and praise when baby is around to let him know that baby is a GOOD thing. If it continues for too long though definitely talk to your vet.

  • That doesn't sound like an baby anxiety thing. That sounds like a legitimate the puppy is actually sick from something thing. I'd take him to the vet.
  • We have talked to the vet and they agree it's stress from the baby. Will be calling them again on Monday if it doesn't get better. Just looking for tips in the mean time to try and help.
  • When our dog got sick with upset stomach type issues our vet said to give him a child's-size dose of peptobismal and boiled hamburger. It's important to get the grease out of the meat when you feed it to the pup.
  • Thanks for the advice. We'll give those things a try.
  • Have you tried one of those thunder jackets? I know a couple of people with anxious dogs and they help. They aren't a magic fix and you would still need to help the pup out but both dogs who use them are significantly less stressed when they are on.
  • See what you're vet recomends for anxiety meds until your pup gets over the new baby.
For now you can try plain yoghurt, rice, applesauce or myralax to help ease his tummy. Or you can give a regular tums, half one if he's a small dog (under 40 pounds)
If your vet wont help out get a second opinion. It can take up to a month or more for an animal to get used to a new human/animal in their home. Especially one they can not fully interact with.
  • Our boys can be super anxiety prone which leads to physical illness as well. Chicken and white rice instead of their food seems to help. In addition, we recently discovered the use of essential oils. We dilute some lavendar or mellow mix in some almond oil and apply it to their ears. This helps ours too. Poor baby :( Sensing you guys good vibes.
  • Please avoid giving your pup any OTC meds, like PPs have suggested, unless your vet explicitly states that you should and gives you the appropriate dosing instructions. I'm sorry that you are going through this. We have a dog with bad anxiety also. I would suggest the thunder shirt as another PP did. Hopefully, after a few weeks, the adjustment period will be over and your pup will be doing better. It's good that you are already communicating with your vet. If things don't improve, there are anxiety meds that they can prescribe that can be very effective. Hopefully it doesn't come to that and everything works itself out. Good luck!

  • All of the food suggestions are good, but our vet always makes sure our dog has 12 hours of not eating at all after he has diarrhea to let his stomach recover.  So try to give his system a little bit of a break.  Sorry you're having such a hard time!  Hope your pup transitions to being calm and healthy soon!
  • With my last fur baby the thunder jackets were heaven sent. They're expensive but worth it. I have heard that they don't work for all dogs, so check return policies from where you buy to make sure if it doesn't work that you can return it. Also agree with a PP about asking before giving your dog OTC meds, but our vet suggested a half of a Benadryl for severe anxiety attacks. It also helps with vomitting.
  • Our pooch has chronic colitis which means he will have bouts of diarrhea because reasons. He is not on any medications as we have been able to manage his symptoms with food and treating flare ups. He gets regular old Metamucil fiber powder on his kibble twice a day, and for flare ups he gets one pepto pills per meal and one fortiflora  packet a day which you can get from your Vet.  For very bad flares he gets rice until his guts settle, and rice and chicken for a day after that.  The pepto/fortiflora usually knocks the diarrhea out in a single day. Obviously talk about all of this with your vet, but this is what works for us.

  • We have a medication called antixane I think that was prescribed to us by our vet for situations where nothing else works. In our case usually it's fireworks or a house full of people. Its not real strong just takes the edge off and may help him pull it together enough to where some training techniques start to work. Worth mentioning I think. Sometimes until you get the panic to stop it's all useless.
  • And if you haven't been, maybe try taking him for longer walks. It will give him another outlet for his anxious energy. It will also help him keep that bond with his people and a well excercised dog is a calm dog...usually. Good luck! I hope your pooch is able to adjust sooner rather than later.
