Weird/new potential allergy? (cats)

Hi! I am about 7 weeks along with my first baby. Being it is my first time being pregnant, I feel like I am being a little hypersensitive to any changes but curious if anyone had the same issue...

We have two cats, that I've had for 8 years. No signs of allergies AT ALL. Ever since being pregnant, whenever the cats are around me I get super stuffy, has anyone else had this problem? Seems odd to me, but felt like I had to ask.

Re: Weird/new potential allergy? (cats)

  • I actually thought that same thing too. But I noticed it before I knew I was pregnant. I have two cats and a guinea pig, and I seem to get more stuffy and itchy eyes when I get home. I grew up with pets and have had cats for 5 years. I know developing allergies to pets can happen (I developed allergies to rats since I worked at PetSmart for 6 years and couldn't keep my pet rats anymore.) :( Hope that's not happening with the cats!

  • Yikes! Yeah, I've heard about developing allergies, but since it just started after becoming pregnant I was curious if it was one of those weird things that my body chose to get sensitive to... sigh, so strange.
  • It's really common for new allergies to appear during pregnancy. Any time there is a change in hormones it can affect allergies.
  • Interesting.. do you know if new allergies are something that tend to stick around after pregnancy?
  • When I was pregnant with my ds, I developed very sensitive skin. I had to switch my soaps and detergents to the basics with no dyes or anything. It did go away after ds was born and the crazy thing is, he has excema (sp?).
  • Interesting! Hmmm
  • It's got something to do with the immune system in pregnancy being lower, the normal immune system can stave off the allergy reaction while a lowered one can not. I've had it explained to me by both the dvm I work for and the ob and the mfm - last preganancy I was having a ton of trouble and since i work at a vet clinic it was driving me nuts to think I was suddenly gonna be allergic to everything forever.sure enough soon as pregnancy over prob by 3 mos pp I was back to normal no allergy symptoms with any animals. No trouble so far this go around but we shall see...
