Anatomy scans

When did you get your AS with a clear answer as far as sex? I read somewhere that it's usually btwn 18-22w. I had to change drs due to insurance and the new one is having me do a sono (my first one this time around) before the visit as her protocol. I will be 17w3d. I'm just wondering if they'll be able to tell us sex conclusively and was curious what others' experiences were. Thanks!

    what PP said.
there's nothing wrong with being excited to find out if your LO is a boy or girl. however, finding out that baby is healthy & developing properly should be priority #1. like PP said, finding out the sex is just the cherry on top of the cake. the tech who did my US took all of her measurments & at the very end quickly checked the sex & told me I'm having a boy.

i personally had my a/s at 19 weeks exactly. they should still be able to accurately tell you the sex of your baby at 17w3d though. you can always discuss this with the US tech at your appointment.
  • I know that and understand that. I am a mother and have done this before. Thanks for the input. Just curious if we could find the sex out as well.

  • Ultrasounds aren't 100% accurate/reliable. Just saying.
  • You should be able to see clearly between 18-20 wks if the baby is in a favourable position. The U/S we had a 16w pretty much told us what we were having but they could tell us "for sure" at 19+3w (we have regular ultrasounds because it's a twin pregnancy so the 16w scan was just a growth scan).

That being said, I was far more concerned that everything was going well with the babies because there are so many risks with a twin pregnancy

  • My OB was fairly certain my son was a boy at about 15 weeks on an ultrasound in his office. The AS agreed with him at 22 weeks. This time, I found out with the harmony test at 10 weeks.

  • It's too early in the morning for me to go on a tangent so I'll just answer your question. At 17 weeks it was told to me I was having a boy with 75% chance. It wasn't really big enough yet to see, but his positioning was also making it difficult. Things were confirmed at 21 weeks.
  • FTM here just now 13w 4d so be kind. :) So I had positive NT results at 12 weeks0 Days and I am going back for my a/s on Feb. 4th. Due to lil babes positioning they struggled to see the nose bone which I believe is a soft marker for downs if it's not prominent so we didn't get that result which is fine do they look for more soft markers or could someone tell me what all they are looking at ? Also I totally know it's not a sex identification tool so I'm not
Looking for that in it :)

  • At 14 weeks, I went to a boutique ultrasound place, and they told me it was definitely a girl. That was confirmed at my 20-week anatomy scan. I preferred how we approached this because it meant we weren't at the anatomy scan really thinking about the baby's sex at all -- just focused on the actual purpose of it: her health.

    This.

My A/S is on the 11th. BUT!!!! my next appointment with my OB is on Tuesday (the 5th). We honestly don't care what the sex is, as long as he/she is healthy. That is honestly the ONLY thing DH and I really care about.

ETA: @saladflambe I LOVE your siggy!!!

  • Everyone values the health of their child above all else. That is a given, I would assume. I was just wondering if we would be told sex as well. Either sex is fine. We are just curious and excited to know more about our baby.

  • We had one done at 16 weeks and our tech was positive it was a girl. This was reconfirmed at our anatomy scan (which we had to have done twice). 17+ weeks you should be fine as long as baby lets you see.

  • Thanks for sharing your experiences, ladies! H&H9!

They will look for the presence, measurement and placement of vital organs. If any of those registers as a soft marker for any abnormality your doctor will let you know. Usually ultrasound techs don't give you that info, it comes from your doc/midwife (I think it's a liability issue). Hoping you get some clear answers and good A/S results.

  • My high risk OB told me that at my next u/s at 14w4d they might be able to tell the sex. My cousin-in-law was told she was having twin girls at 18w and surprise...one boy and one girl (they had wanted to be team green and the one doc didn't know that and slipped so they never asked for another confirmation after that). So I think it's a probability game. I'd say there's a good chance they'll be able to tell at 17 weeks, but maybe hold off on painting the nursery :) Also, the insinuations that OP's first priority isn't the health of her baby is a bit ridiculous...sheesh,
  • If the baby is in a good position, you should be able to find out the sex at your scan. I just had my AS at 17+6 and even tho she was measuring 17 weeks the tech still felt confident confirming it was a girl. GL!!
  • Thanks for the positive responses, ladies.
