Feel ridiculous asking but...

I'm a third time mom so this feels ridiculous to ask but I've been having what I assumed were BH (never had any with my other two) for about three hours now. They are very uncomfortable but they aren't full on painful, and they are only happening on the top half of my belly. I've moved around, laid down, and taken a shower but they are still here. With my other two I had short labors and I woke up in the middle of the night in labor and was already at 5cm or more by the time I got to the hospital, so I'm not sure I've ever felt early labor.

Any advice?

Re: Feel ridiculous asking but...

  • Drink some water and try to rest. If it is early labor you will want the rest, if it isn't it should subside soon.

I am a pregnant with my third and am having all kinds of aches and pains I never had with my first two, I feel so clueless! They say third babies are unpredictable!

  • Honestly you should go get checked out. I say that because you have done almost everything except drinking some water to stop BH's. If you don't know what you are experiencing then it's best to go get checked out. Not every pregnancy is the same so you may feel things differently this time. That's what I would do.
  • I never had any BH with DD, either, but I think I'm getting them now. My belly feels hard/tight and just generally uncomfortable (but not painful, like a real contraction) for a minute or two and then relaxes. I haven't had more than one or two per day, so I know I'm not in labor, but if they were happening more often and for an extended period of time I'd probably go get checked out. This pregnancy has been so radically different from my previous one, too! My OB keeps saying "but I'm sure you remember this from your last pregnancy" and I'm like "no, what?! This never happened with DD!"
  • I would say if they aren't painful then you can probably lay down and wait it out. Might be early labor or false labor. But with this being your third, I would be ready to go just in case things change quickly. Good luck!
  • This is number 5 for me and I feel like I have no clue what is going on. I have not experienced BH like the ones I have had lately. This pregnancy is different from all of my others.
  • I'm having painless contractions every 5 minutes. Have been all evening/night. This is my second so I figured I would know right away what was going on. Nope! I know I'm having the contraction because the outside of my stomach feels like it's going to bust open from being so tight. I've been having back pain all day, but the back pain and the stomach tightening are never at the same time. I had my membranes stripped on Tuesday, I was very soft, had right there, & dilated 2cm and I've had the worst discharge every time I go to the bathroom since. I've had a couple contractions that I've actually felt as real contractions, but nothing that hurt or took my breath away like they do. Idk what to do. Hubby wants me to go be checked for safe measures and I don't want to go and just be sent back home for Braxton Hicks. Thoughts?

I would call first and see what they say. If you've done everything you can and they're persisting I wouldn't write it off just yet. Better safe than sorry!
  • As soon as I was about to call my OB they stopped- of course. Same thing happened last night, with the added pleasure of diarrhea, insomnia, and, when I finally got to sleep, night sweats. I guess my body is just going haywire in the final weeks. Never had any of these issues with my other two- crazy how different it can be every time!
