Nap on me nightmare... 4 months

My lovely baby will only nap on me while I rock him. If I put him down anywhere he's up. The only other place he will nap during the day is while driving in carseat, but as soon as car stops or I try to transfer him out he's up. Little man sleeps like a champ at night (8-10hr stint) so I guess I'll just deal, but I literally can't do anything during the day if I want him to sleep at all.
Anyone else dealing with this or have success stories to share about overcoming this?

Re: Nap on me nightmare... 4 months

  • I deal with this daily! His crib is upstairs so I've given up on carrying him up to it (he wakes up on the way), and he hates his swing and wakes up when I put him in his bouncy seat. So he naps with me or whoever happens to be holding him. I don't get much done, but I sure love to snuggle with him :) I'm off work til Monday, so I'm just soaking it up. Hubby and I have both been off work since December 18 for Christmas break, so we have been tag teaming the cooking and housework.

  • Have you tried swaddling him for naps? You could also sleep with one of this swaddle blankets so it smells like you to give the illusion you're still with him when you put him down? That helped when we sleep trained my oldest.
  • That's exactly my LO. He will fall asleep while nursing and then sleep on me if I don't move, but I rarely have time to let him do that. If I try to transfer him elsewhere he wakes up right away. He always hated being swaddled and I tried warming his crib up with a heating pad before transferring him, but that doesn't do anything either. If I need him to nap I drive to the store then put his car seat in the main part of the carriage so that it rocks back and forth a bit while the cart bumps along. That's the only other way he'll sleep during the day. He goes down right away at night though, and sleeps from 8:30-6:45.

  • Can you wear him so you can at least get some things done? Will he sleep in a bouncer or a swing? My first was a swing hater until I brought out the big guns and used the varsity method on him.  After that I could get a few decent naps until he matured enough to sleep easily in his crib.
  • This sounds a lot like my son. Sometimes he will sleep in his swing. But he will not nap in his crib. His naps aren't very long. I've learned not to shower when he's napping. Not enough time. Instead I bring his activity gym into my room and let him play on that. I figured that out this week and was able to take an amazing shower yesterday and shave my legs!
  • I used to be terrible at the transfer and couldn't get her into the swing or crib without waking up. Recently, I started patting her bottom while I was walking and transferring and continuing to do it for a little bit once she's in the crib before walking away. It's helped us tremendously. I hope you find what works for your LO!
  • I have the same issue and I have begun to really work on it the last couple of days. I bought a Magic Merlin sleep suit and I am now lay her down beside me on my bed and help her get herself to sleep. It's working so far. Once she is able to get herself to sleep well with me beside her- I will try and see what happens when I put her in her crib without me laying right beside her...I may have to stand there or sit beside her crib for a bit until I can slowly remove myself from the equation. I just have to make sure I don't get lazy about it and choose to snuggle her instead :)
  • When I lay baby down in his crib, I usually place my hands somewhat firmly on his chest for a minute or so, so he still thinks I'm holding him. Then I very slowly remove my hands one at a time. It seems to help!
  • I second baby wearing. He might fight it and fuss for the first few minutes but just start doing chores and after 5-10 mine always passes out cold until I take him out! I've worn him for up to two hours before.
  • Very rarely will he sleep in his crib for naps. I usually swaddle him and put him in the rock n play for naps and his crip for bed time. I don't know why he's fine with it for bedtime and not naps but whatever works!
