Infertility

Cyst following stim cycle

Any ladies have a cyst left after a stimulation cycle ? I have a huge one that I am on birth control for right now but last time I called the nurse she mentioned that I may have to have surgery to remove it if birth control doesn't get rid of it . I don't know if she mentioned this as worst case scenario or if this is common . I'm scared !!

Re: Cyst following stim cycle

  • I did... I had a few actually which is why my frest ET was turned into a FET. My doc was hoping being off stims and on BC would do the trick. I guess between that, acupuncture and Rasperry Leaf Tea something worked and I didn't end up needing the surgery.

  • I had one left over after a clomid/IUI cycle. Unfortunately birth control pills didn't control it for me so I had to have It aspirated so that I could move on with my IVF. The aspiration wasn't bad. It was like a mini egg retrieval. They put you out but it only takes like 10 minutes and I didn't have any pain.

  • @mskeenan thanks for posting this thread! I have a cyst now :(

I just came off a stim cycle with letrozole and follistim. AF came after my BFN BETA and I went in today for baseline. Turns out I have a Cyst on my left ovary so large that the RE initially mistook it for my bladder...

I am starting birth control tomorrow and they will do another ultrasound to check the status of the cyst. They basically said I will have to stay on BC until it resolves.
  • Ive had cysts after every one of my cycles. Only once was it actually painful, and it just felt like period cramps but on one side. My doctor just told me not to do anything strenuous. The first time I was told to take a month off to let them go away naturally, which they did. The second time they put me on bc because the cysts didn't go away on their own after a month. I then switched RE's. My new RE gives me the choice of going on bc for a month and basically just taking the month off, or going on bc for just two weeks and if the cysts go away starting the cycle then. So far I've opted for the two weeks because I was sick of taking every other month off. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Mine are always bigger than my ovaries themselves and bc has always done the trick. It's apparently quite common to get cysts after stim cycles.
  • Like @pamelated, I had cysts after each injectable cycle.  I did one natural cycle (which was 40+ days long) and after that I just took the BC to speed the process along.  I had several cysts each cycle and they always went away with the BC.  It's a bummer to have to take the time off, but mine always went away.

  • I had a cyst following my second Clomid/IUI cycle.  The RE said that because the cyst was not producing estrogen, it was not a problem to get right into IUI #3.  I just had monitoring this morning, and it looks like the cyst has gotten a little smaller, but I didn't get as many mature follicles this time, it seems, not sure if it's because of the cyst or if I just responded differently this time.  I have at least one > 20, though, so it seems like we're still proceeding with the IUI this week, although waiting on bloodwork results.

  • I had 5 large cysts after my fist injectables cycle. I knew I had one because my right side was hurting, but turns out I had three very large on my right and 2 large on my left. I took BC for 2 weeks then went back for an ultrasound, and they were gone. I didn't feel pain on my right after about 3 or 4 days. Good luck!

  • I guess maybe size matters, but I ended up with a cyst (22 or 25mm I think) following my lap and hysteroscopy, which were done around ovulation time. They told me not to worry about it and take the meds as planned because it was not an estrogen-producing cyst. I was on femara days 3-7 and follistim days 6 on, and by day 6 it was much smaller, and completely gone by day 9. Didn't affect the cycle at all (except from making my period a few days late on the cycle of my surgery, but that could have also been because of how much I bled and my lining needing to recover). Seems like some REs make a much bigger deal of cysts than others.
  • Good news ! My cyst is gone - only needed 2 weeks on birth control to resolve it . I also did an acupuncture treatment but not sure if that really helped . I am staying on birth control for another month anyways before starting IVF meds :)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone !!

@PCOSat25 hope yours goes away quickly

  • @mskeenan I go in to have it checked on 12/10 which will be after 3 weeks of BC but I am going to call my RE tomorrow to see if we can change something. I am NOT doing well with the BC. I have been drinking tons of water but I wake up every morning feeling so dehydrated and hung over. I am so nauseous that I am not even functional until like noon!!! And if I go more than a few hours without eating the nausea hits me again like a ton of bricks.

I went to get coffee with a friend on Wednesday and was with her for a few hours and serious thought I was going to loose it! Luckily I remembered I had a power bar in my purse (life saver).

I remember being nauseous on BC when I was younger but nothing like this!!! In the past I just had to take it with food and I was fine but now I am just miserable all day! It has to be the BC because nothing else has changed...
  • @PCOSat25 ugh I'm so sorry ! You know the same thing happened to me the first two times I was on the pill I'm currently on . I would throw up or be nauseated in the morning . Now I'm fine but it still makes me bloated and exhausted . Maybe they could switch you to a different brand ? I know it's a pain in the ass being on the pill. I didn't realize I would have to be on the pill so much while trying to get pregnant

  • Well I guess there is comfort in knowing it is not just me who has this reaction to BC! I remember today that I have "sea bands" from the last cruise i took. They are kind of a wrist acupressure thing for motion sickness and they seem to be helping a lot today! We will see how tomorrow goes but if I am still feeling crappy on Monday I will call my RE and ask for a different BC to try. Sometimesbit is just a matter of finding the right pill...

I am so glad to hear your cyst has resolved @mskeenan. Does that mean you will get to do another IUI in December? I think I remember you saying you were concerned you would have to make the big jump to IVF...

We have officially decided my husband will freeze samples so that I can do at least two more IUIs.
  • @PCOSat25 what a great idea to use the wristbands ! I've used those before but didn't think to use them for nausea from hormones . I'm gonna give it a shot .

That's exciting about freezing samples ! I read somewhere that if you freezes perm you have to wait six months to use it . Is that true ? When is your next IUI ??

We decided not to move forward with another IUI . I'm not sure if it is the right decision . We are taking December off mostly bc I wanted to rest off the hormones . I'm trying to get back in shape and enjoy the holidays with my husband . We would have done more IUIs but financially it is working out to do IVF in January bc we have a large amount of flex spending money through my husbands work available January 1st . We also have all the IVF meds currently in our fridge bc we ordered them when we thought insurance was going to pay for IVF . They paid for the meds but not the procedure - so odd ! We are likely moving sometime in the spring so we want to get IVF done with our current doctor so we don't have to start over with someone new .

  • I wnet in for my baseline appointment today and I have a cyst on my one ovary.  They didn't give me bcp but told me to come back next week to check on it and see if it's going down on it's own.  I was all set to start clomid and gonal f injections tonight but it is all on hold now until at least next week. So frustrating

  • @rachlee2010 have you had your cyst check? Any progress?

I go in on Thursday to check mine which will be day 18 of BCP. Definitely hoping it is GONE!!! Although we are going away for Christmas so I will still take BCP for at least one more week to delay next cycle and make sure the holiday doesn't interfere with appointments. This will be IUI #2 and the last one I can do with "fresh" sperm before my husband leaves for 10 months! Fx
  • yes @PCOSat25 I went in on monday and was checked..cyst is still there but is slightly smaller and giving off less estrogen so moving in the right direction.  We can't do any meds/treatment this cycle but they want me to come back in on monday to make sure it's still moving in the right direction.

We are planning to move to IVF in January so depending on when AF shows either next cycle or the one after that as the cyst could delay things they said.  Meeting with the Dr at the end of the month to map out our IVF cycle/meds/appointments and all that.

I hope yours is gone and good luck with IUI #2
  • Cyst check today. Still there. Still big (but about 25% reductions in size so moving in the right direction). Headed into 3 more weeks of BC then a recheck. Hopefully it will be small enough that we can do a cycle in January before my husband leaves...

Spoke with the lab about freezing samples so I can continue while he is gone but it is looking a lot more complicated/expensive than I thought it would be sooo we could potentially be out until December 2016. Blahhhhh
  • Ok cyst check number two Tomorrow after about 6 weeks of BCP. Let's hope this thing is gone and I can squeeze in an iui cycle before DH leaves 1/29
  • Hey @PCOSat25 ! Ah I hope that cyst is gone gone gone ! And hope you can do another IUI cycle !!

I'm so glad to be off birth control - I hate it ! I ended up being hospitalized for a migraine (my husband was afraid I was having a stroke ) . And I lost a ton of hair from being on bc for two months ! Now I'm off and no migraines and hair loss has stopped . I just started my IVF stim meds on Monday !!

  • @mskeenan I am sorry you had such a hard time with the BC. That is so scary. But so exciting that you are starting your stims for ivf!

My cyst is still going strong. But they are going to let me go off the BC to thin my lining and start a cycle. They are just going to have to aspirate it at my baseline appointment as it is not going away on its own. My nurse warned that it will NOT be pleasant bit at least i will get to do a cycle in jan 2016 :)
  • I had that happen too. I waited a month and it got significantly smaller, small enough that after a month off I was able to take femara again with no complications. Good luck!
  • @sabrinahoppas yes that was supposed to be the plan...BC for a month and it would go away on its own. I did 4 weeks of BC and a cyst check to see that it was still there. I then did 3 more weeks with no luck. My RE was actually pretty surprised it had not resolved as it is a simple fluid filled cyst and should GO AWAY. Oh well I always have liked to be the difficult patient...

So excited for this next iui. Originally we planned to do 3 but we are getting pretty impatient and WANT RESULTS. So we may jump to ivf after this next one. We will just have to see...

    Big decisions :(
  • Gosh, I'm sorry to hear that! I wish you the best of luck! My husband and I also had a recent setback. Sometimes it seems like everything that can go wrong does. I hope with the new year things turn around. :)
