Genetic testing

Is anyone considing genetic testing or know how much the different ones cost? I have no risk factors, but like to know things so I can research. I also saw one say you can know the gender after 9 weeks.

Re: Genetic testing

  • I will be getting the NT scan and cell-free DNA testing. The cell-free testing is what allows you to learn the sex of your baby and can be done at 10.5 weeks (per my genetic testing office).

To learn costs, you have to call the medical office where you'll be receiving the tests and ask for the diagnostic (or billing) codes. Be prepared, as each test will easily have 5-10 codes associated with it. For example, the NT testing has codes associated with your genetic counseling consultation, two ultrasounds, bloodwork, and more. After receiving the codes, call the number on the back of your insurance card and say you have some billing codes and want to confirm how much will be covered by insurance. They won't be able to give you a dollar amount, as each office charges a different amount for the procedures, but they will give you a percentage. Depending on the answers you get from insurance, you may want to call your medical office to confirm the dollar amount charged for the codes not covered by your insurance.

As an example, my insurance company won't cover one of the ten codes I asked about. I learned from my office that they charge $100 for that procedure. Since my insurance company will cover the two u/s codes (over $700 each) and everything else, I'm comfortable proceeding knowing I will have to pay $100 for that one code they will end up denying.

  • I will get the harmoni again. My insurance covers it, but if insurance doesn't it can cost thousands (or so I've heard).

I will get the blood screening that's offered because my dad was adopted and we're missing a good chunk of his medical history (ETA) so I don't know what genetic issues (if any) I carry. I don't know anything about cost, but if you call and talk to someone in insurance and billing at your office, they should be able to tell you.

  • Did you have your first appointment with your doctor yet?

At my initial appointment they gave me a packet of info that lays out the different tests you can choose to do, and the standard tests, the timelines for the tests and they also to gave me the codes for the tests so I could call my insurance to see if they're covered.

My insurance covers the first trimester Ultrascreen test for abnormalities and I'm planing to do that. Other than that I'll just be doing the standard ones (blood, anatomy scan, etc.).
