maternity leave

For those who work, I am curious what is the average benefit here.
My employer gives the mandated maximum 12 weeks FMLA. We can only accrue 10 days of vacation. And sick time we can save up a little more. So by the time baby comes I might get 5 weeks paid - 7 weeks unpaid.
Married - 4/7/07
Son #1- 2/15/08
Son #2- 8/18/10
Baby 3 due 8/8/16

Re: maternity leave

  • That's similar to mine (I'm a teacher). We are required to use all accrued leave before going to unpaid leave. We get 12 weeks with job security, and we can take up to one year but we can be transferred around within the district to other positions.

With DS, I had to go on bed rest at 29 weeks. They started my maternity leave at that point, so I had to go back sooner after DS was born to keep my job. Also good to keep in mind: we had to pay back my insurance costs when I went on unpaid leave. It completely wiped out my pay checks for the rest of the calendar year, so I was still basically unpaid for three months after returning to work.

I wish I had known more about my maternity benefits early on in my pregnancy! We could have been much better prepared.

  • i am a nurse and we have pto time where i work so all of our sick and vacation is together.By the time the baby comes i will have over 4 weeks of paid time of just from that ,I am going to use my short term disability which is 6 weeks. so 10 weeks ill be bringing in some money. im taking 12 weeks of total so i will have 2 weeks of unpaid time off. My plan is to save back money from our taxes and every paycheck so when that time comes it wont make a difference because we will have money saved back.
  • I'm fortune to have some good benefits. Next year I'll have 5 weeks for sick leave and more sick weeks (not sure how many) at 60% pay. I also have 3 weeks vacation, one of the weeks carried over from this year since I knew there was a high posibility of having a baby since we were trying.

  • My job sucks. No short term disability is offered. We are not allowed to roll over vacation. So all I will get it the 3 week of time off I have. The other 9 weeks will be unpaid, and I will have to pay in for my insurance. It's really stressful along with the thousands of out of pocket costs to the hospital to actually have the baby.

My job requires you use all sick and vacation time prior to taking unpaid leave. I should have 2 weeks vacation and two weeks sick time by then. No short term disability offered. work is small enough that FLMA doesn't apply, but will give time off on a month by month basis. We will be aggressively saving money so I can maybe stay home 10 weeks.
  • My company doesn't offer any paid maternity leave. It does fall under FMLA, so I'll have 12 weeks unpaid protected.

I accrue a lot of sick time (the cap must be really high since I have 300 something hours). For vacation I'm near the max accrual of 260 hours. I also pay for short term disability through work at about 60% pay for 6-8 weeks depending on if it's a vaginal birth or c-section.

  • I'm a teacher in the UK and was beginning to worry but think we may have a better deal that I first thought! I will get 2 weeks full pay, 4 weeks 90% + SMP, 12weeks half pay +SMP the ln the remaining 23 weeks at SMP only. We can not save any holidays/sick days etc tho :-( I'm now saving like mad to boost the SMP only months so I can have as long off as possible xx
  • I'm fortunate to get 12 weeks at 100% pay, however I'm considering asking if I can do 7-8 weeks at the beginning, and then using the remainder throughout the next year. 4 day weeks so I can schedule doctors appts, work flex schedules, etc
  • I'm starting a new job Aug 23 with Orientation around Aug 18. I'm a faculty member, so I am hoping I will only need to come to campus 2-3 days per week, but I don't qualify for FMLA or short-term medical leave because I will just be starting. We have an ultrasound next week, so I hope the due date matches up with what I expect (around Aug 3). I haven't discussed with my employer yet; I'm waiting to be out of the first trimester.

  • No FMLA where I work. The company is too small to meet that requirement. I don't plan on coming back so will likely tell them early so they can start looking for a replacement.
  • I have to take all earned time before FMLA kicks in. So I will have 2 weeks vacation and like a week of sick time. I am taking the full 12 weeks though, just like for ds.

  • I live in Canada.  We can legally take up to 12 months off.  The government pays you during that time, but the payment is capped and based on a percentage of your regular income, so for me, it is significantly lower than my regular pay (less than 50%).  In addition to that, my company tops me up to 100% of my salary for the first 16 weeks.  I'll take at least 16 weeks of maternity leave, but may take a bit more, depending on our financial situation (I'm the main breadwinner).

  • My entire leave will be unpaid. Planning to take 12 weeks at this point.
  • My job is really great when it comes to maternity leave-- we can take 12-14 weeks fully paid, use whatever vacation we have (if we choose to do so), and still can take the 12 weeks of FMLA (these 12 weeks would be unpaid). As of now, I'm planning on my 12 weeks fully paid and probably tacking on some vacation, or else I'll lose it

  • Maternity (and paternity) leave in the US is a joke. I work for a Danish company and my colleagues overseas get a year; even dads get 3-6 months. I feel so lucky to be able to take 12 weeks, I know so many moms that had to go back at 6 weeks, or sooner. I am only starting to feel normal at 12 weeks. With vacation and leave, I will have a couple of weeks unpaid.

  • I will have 6 months paid at 100% i start this job in March and this benefit starts day one. Ill only be there for 7months before I go on leave. Thats why I got the new job. My current job i dont get any paid time off. I agree the leave time for new famlies in this country blow!
  • My job is the same. We get 12 weeks but have to use our sick/personal and vacation time.

I'm also lucky that my job allows us extended sick time. We get 2 weeks at 1/2 pay for every year we have worked there. But we also have the option to take an additional year off without pay.

I will end up with about 6 months off and paid for a number of it.

  • My job provides 5 weeks at 70% of my salary. I can take up to 12 weeks total, but the other 7 have to either be unpaid or use PTO. I'll be taking a total of 7 weeks off, using two weeks of pto. I plan to ask if I can work from home for my first week back so I'll get a total of 8 weeks at home. We can't afford for me to take any unpaid time off since I'm the primary earner. Plus I want to save some of my personal/pto time in case any of the kids get sick toward the end of the year, as they usually do.

  • When we were TTC the company I worked for offered 6 weeks at 60%. As of TOMORROW!!!! squee... they offer 8 weeks at 100%, plus I can use my three weeks vacation and one week sick time.

I plan on staying home for ten weeks, then my mom will move in with us for my first month back. The little will head to daycare between three and four months old. We might be able to stretch it to five if his mom comes out for a month (which she might.) I would feel way more comfortable leaving a five month old, who can roll over, hold their head up etc then a two month old with a stranger. Babies are a little more... durable... at that age!

Luckily our pediatrician is 5 minutes from our house, and opens at 7am. I don't have to be at work until 9, so we should be able to make that work without needing any more time off.

Jeaaaalous. I haven't looked into maternity leave as of yet. I do know that mine pays half pay and I *think* it is for 6 weeks. But, I also have Aflac short-term disability that pays half *i think*. So, we will see. I am waiting till after my first U/S to ask. That way I can just kill two birds with one stone.

*drop the ultrasound on the desk* "Now, how long do I get off in August?"

    Sounds reasonable.
